Amazon to employees: We'll pay you to quit and haul packages

Amazon employees interested in setting up their own package delivery businesses may receive up to $10,000 from the e-commerce giant

Amazon, which is racing to deliver packages faster, is turning to its employees with a proposition: Quit your job and we'll help you start a business delivering Amazon packages.

Amazon did not say how many employees it expects to accept the new incentive program.

An Amazon statement said the latest incentive would also include three months of wages for employees who want to start their own delivery enterprise, and that they would be assured "consistent delivery volume" from the company.

The offer is open to most part-time and full-time Amazon employees, including those working in warehouses and other places where products are stored.

The new employee incentive is part of a program Amazon started a year ago that lets anyone apply to launch an independent Amazon delivery business. Amazon said it plans to add "hundreds more" new businesses in 2019, and has expanded the partnership offering to the United Kingdom and Spain. So far, 200 delivery businesses have been created through the program.

Amazon said it would offer access to the company's delivery technology, training, and discounts on assets and services, including Amazon-branded vans and uniforms and insurance.

CBS MoneyWatch contributor Kathy Kristof cautioned a year ago that would-be delivery moguls "may want to think twice before you accept it".

"It is a 24/7 management commitment", Peter Schlactus, co-founder of the Association for Delivery Drivers, told Kristof.

John Felton is Amazon's vice president of global delivery services. Amazon is offering a complete package which it calls the Amazon Delivery Service Partner program.

Last month, Amazon said it expected to spend $800 million this quarter on shortening delivery times to a single day for Prime buyers, with shoppers in North America expected to be the first to benefit.

James Thomson, who spent years in high-level positions at Amazon and today runs a consultancy that helps businesses navigate the Amazon ecosystem, said the move underscores the company's "immediate and large-scale" need to recruit drivers and to maximize their use once they are in the fold. His company now has 120 employees, a fleet of 50 delivery vans, and makes up to 200 deliveries a day.

Collier says his business is already preparing for the one-day shipping goal by looking for more workers.

"We're ready", Collier said.
