Campus Shooting Suspect Lived In North Texas Before Moving To North Carolina

Multiple police officers rush campus of UNC-Charlotte following shooting

Riley Howell, 21, was among students gathered for end-of-year presentations in an anthropology class at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte when a man with a pistol began shooting.

A UNC Charlotte student who was killed in Tuesday's shooting is being hailed a hero after police say he went after the gunman in an attempt to save others.

The latest in a string of mass shootings in the USA came just days after a teenage gunman opened fire on a synagogue in Poway, California, killing one person and injuring three others.

"A student should not have to fear for his or her life when they are on our campuses", he said. Two of those people's injuries are life-threatening.

Police have identified the alleged shooter as Trystan Andrew Terrell, 22, a former student at UNC Charlotte. The grandfather said Terrell showed no interest in guns or other weapons and any suggestion he participated in a mass shooting stunned him.

"You're either going to run, you're going to hide and shield, or you're going to take the fight to the assailant". Those wounded were Sean Dehart, 20, and Drew Pescaro, 19, both of Apex; Emily Houpt, 23, of Charlotte; and Rami Alramadhan, 20, of Saihat, Saudi Arabia.

Officials offered no explanation for what might have precipitated the shooting, and it was unclear whether the assailant knew any of his victims.

It was not immediately clear who Terrell was referring to in his Wednesday comment. "I didn't think I would have to experience something like that", one student told NBC News.

"When I spoke to the father - one father to another - I told him personally, I wished I had words", he said.

A spokeswoman for Charlotte-Mecklenberg Police Department confirmed there had been an active shooter at the university but declined to give any further information. "It was just really scary". They said the shooting is still under investigation.

There are no threats to students to the school, police added at the news conference, The Washington Post reported. They said he's in custody with charges pending.

Police at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte were going through campus buildings to tell anyone still sheltering in place that the scene is secure.

"Medic responded and transported three victims to Atrium Health Carolina's Medical Center", police said a press release. ". The unthinkable happened on our campus.an individual opened fire in a UNC Charlotte classroom, cutting short the lives of two members of our community and seriously injuring four others". Now, she says she feels guilty for surviving.
