Mueller's report will be made public within a week, says Barr

As Mueller release nears White House renews attacks

US President Donald Trump's justice chief said on Tuesday his review of the two-year Russian meddling investigation is on schedule and a redacted version of the report could be released by next week.

Rep. Devin Nunes, the ranking Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, announced last week he was sending eight criminal referrals to Barr regarding abuses committed by the FBI and DoJ during the Russiagate investigation - including three that involve efforts to mislead and abuse the FISA courts.

Barr told lawmakers at a contentious hearing on Tuesday that he was reviewing the bureau's "conduct" during the summer of 2016.

"I don't intend at this stage to send the full unredacted report to the committee", Barr told a House of Representatives Appropriations subcommittee.

He added that he is relying on his own discretion to make as much public as he can. He took over the Russian Federation probe in May 2017 after Trump abruptly fired former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey.

Others have said Barr made the right decision on the obstruction question, noting that it is hard to prove that Trump committed criminal obstruction if Mueller did not find that he destroyed evidence or directly interfered with the investigation - even though he assailed the inquiry as a "witch hunt" and called the investigators partisan zealots.

After Washington waited almost two years for Mueller to conduct his investigation, Barr released a letter last month stating that the special counsel found no evidence the Trump campaign "conspired or coordinated" with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election. Barr's letter, for instance, hinted that there would be at least one unknown action by the president that Mueller examined as a possible act of obstruction. Barr said he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein then concluded that there was insufficient evidence for an obstruction crime.

Barr testified Tuesday before a congressional subcommittee, and faced Democratic lawmakers who blasted him for what they called his "unacceptable" handling of the initial summary of Mueller's report.

Barr said he did not attempt to summarize the special counsel's report because to do so would simply trigger criticism of being under inclusive or over inclusive.

At the White House on Wednesday, Trump repeated his claim that the investigation was illegal.

House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler is preparing to "very quickly" subpoena the Justice Department and go to court seeking to obtain grand jury information, while House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff says he's made a formal request to obtain the counterintelligence information from Mueller's investigation to learn whether the President is "compromised" in any way.

Further, Barr said the report will "color code the decisions from the report and put in explanatory notes making it public" to distinguish the redactions between the various categories.

Jarrett laid out a case for a criminal investigation by Barr.

Mueller submitted his report on March 22.

Barr said he did not believe the evidence in the report was sufficient to prove the president had obstructed justice.

"I could envision a situation where under appropriate safeguards, that information would be shared", Barr said.

Barr said he wanted to look at all of the investigations that have already probed the matter, including Congress and the Justice Department inspector general, and see if any areas need additional investigation.

Barr, who was nominated to his post by Trump four months ago, was asked about spying by Republican Sen.
