Mark Zuckerberg In Dublin Today To Meet With TDs

Federal officials voicing opposition to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg push for the United States to adopt European-style privacy regulations.

In the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg openly opposed the strict enforcement of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Zuckerberg says that the internet has grown to the point that it needs new rules, and he writes "we need a more active role for governments and regulators".

He called for new regulation in four areas: harmful content, election integrity, privacy and data portability.

The piece comes days after Facebook was criticized when a shooting rampage in New Zealand that killed 50 people was broadcast live on the site.

"We have a responsibility to keep people safe on our services", he said.

Over the past year, lawmakers have focused greater scrutiny on the company and its enormous influence, asking its executives - including Zuckerberg - to testify in front of Congress to explain the proliferation of misinformation, hate speech and election manipulation on the platform. But if we were starting from scratch, we wouldn't ask companies to make these judgments alone, ' he wrote.

With the idea of licensing to fund news on its site put to Mr Zuckerberg, he responded: "That's something I definitely think that we should be thinking about here, because the relationship between us and the publishers is different to a surface where we're showing the content on the basis of us believing that it's high-quality, trustworthy content".

Porzingis didn't play for the Knicks again, and has yet to make his debut for the Mavericks as he continues his injury recovery. The woman told police that Porzingis held her down on a bed, hit her several times in the face, and raped her, the source said.

The comments marked a new direction for Facebook, which has been accused of enabling the spread of misinformation and hoaxes on its "news feed" that contains posts from friends as well as other content personalized for users.

Facebook said last week that it was extending a ban on hate speech to white nationalists and white separatists.

Political advertising is set to be a livewire issue in the talks - with European elections upcoming and ongoing controversy over its role in the Brexit vote.

He said privacy rules such as the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, which took effect in Europe previous year, should be adopted elsewhere in the world.

Publishers have been increasingly squeezed by Facebook's dominant position, as more people opt to consume news from Facebook's News Feed.

The Facebook chief's statement was in keeping with his efforts this year to frame the company's more critical problems as part of broader issues for the internet at large.

Others see this as Zuckerberg's means of bridging the disparity shown between fair use policies in the Unites States and the newly implemented, controversial Copyright Directive throughout Europe.
