Christchurch terrorist attack sees Highlanders-Crusaders match cancelled

Jacinda Ardern said the gunman a 28-year-old Australian obtained a gun licence in November 2017 Attacks on two Christchurch mosques left at least 49 dead on March 15 with one gunman- identified as an Australian extremist- apparently livestreaming

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern awed American gun control advocates Friday night when she announced that her administration would promptly pursue changes to her country's gun laws following the shooting deaths of 49 people at two mosques in Christchurch-in stark contrast to the response of the USA government to similar attacks.

"The offender was mobile, there were two other firearms in the vehicle that the offender was in and it absolutely was his intention to continue with his attack", Ms Ardern told reporters in Christchurch on Saturday.

Ardern explained the perpetrator was in possession of five firearms, including two semi-automatic weapons and two shotguns.

At least 49 people were killed at two mosques full of worshipers attending Friday prayers in Christchurch, New Zealand. "All our condolences to the family of Elayyan and the families of the victims who died in the attacks". New Zealand's police commissioner, Mike Bush, said they were "working through" whether one or both of them had any involvement in this incident.

Among the gun laws that had to change, Ardern said tighter restrictions were needed on the modification of guns that were undertaken in yesterday's attack.

Two other people have been arrested in connection with the terror attack, and they remain in custody as police conduct an ongoing investigation as to their possible involvement.

Ardern met the families of victims on Saturday.

Ardern confirmed that the suspected gunman had not been on the radar of any intelligence agencies for extremism

"Charges have been laid, we can expect additional charges will be appearing in the high court on the fifth of April, so there is obviously a process that needs to be gone through here", she said.

Many of you will have seen that Air New Zealand has cancelled all turboprop flights out of Christchurch tonight and will review the situation in the morning. Two explosive devices were also found in his auto.

Worshipers ran from gunfire, desperately called police and huddled beneath the benches of two Christchurch mosques before two lightly armed community police officers apparently ran the gunman's auto to the side of the road and brought the atrocity to an end after a terrifying 36 minutes.

"It's the time for change", Ardern said.

Mr Bush, who had earlier called the attack a "very well-planned event", said the suspect was not known to police either in New Zealand or Australia. Several more people were killed in an attack on a second mosque in the city a short time later.

Until Friday, the country's worst mass shooting was in 1990, when a lone gunman killed 13 people in the small town of Aramoana. "There are obviously questions being asked of how this person was able to enter the country and undertake this act of terror", the premier said. For those of you who are watching at home tonight and questioning how this could have happened here ...
