Reputed Gambino Crime Boss Frank Cali Shot Dead In Front Of Staten Island Home

A 911 caller reported a blue pickup truck, which may have ran over Cali before or after the shooting, was seen driving away from the scene, according to WABC.

"The Gambino crime family during Castellano's reign was the largest criminal organization in the USA, with law enforcement estimating it had some 250 "'made" members" and "more than 550 lower-ranking "associate' members".

Gotti died of cancer in prison in 2002.

According to local media in New York, Cali took the helm of the family in 2015, replacing Domenico Cefalu. Investigators haven't made any arrests in the hours that have passed but insists the case remains an open book until they publicly state otherwise.

The New York Times notes that Cali's murder came the same day Joseph Cammarano, thought to be the acting boss of the Bonanno crime family, was acquitted at trial.

Later, in November 2008, Weinstein lowered the prison term to 16 months after prosecutors recalculated the victim's loss as $8,000, not $13,000.

Since Gotti's downfall, the Gambinos - and other mafia families - have lost much of the power they once had over politicians, judges and labor unions.

Paul Castellano in 1959.

In 1985, Gambino "capo" John Gotti orchestrated the murder of Castellano to become the most publicized boss of the family.

He had long ties with the Sicilian mafia and the Gambino family, and was said to have intentionally kept a low profile during his time in charge.

"There were like six shots, and then there were three more", one witness, who asked that her name not be used, told The New York Daily News.

In 2008, Cali was arrested and charged with federal racketeering as part of Operation Old Bridge - a code name for the February 7 arrests in Italy and the US that targeted the Gambino crime family.

Last week, the longtime boss of the Colombo crime family, 85-year-old Carmine "the Snake" Persico, died at a North Carolina hospital near the federal prison where he had been serving what was effectively a life sentence. Sylvester Zottola, 71, reportedly of the Bonanno crime family, was gunned down at a McDonald's drive thru in the Bronx last October, according to WABC.

The Genovese, Gambino, Lucchese, Colombo and Bonanno mafia families are believed to have controlled organised crime in NY for decades. One man kneeled down next to Cali's body and sobbed, "Papa!"
