Mitch McConnell wields Green New Deal as bludgeon against Democrats

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he plans to put the Democrats' Green New Deal to a vote so "everyone can go on record and see how they feel about" the measures created to fight climate change.

As IJR previously reported, McConnell announced on Tuesday that the Senate would be voting on the Green New Deal resolution so that members of the Senate can have their support or opposition to the bill on record.

The Green New Deal House resolution introduced last week calls for the elimination of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through massive investments in clean energy sources and millions of jobs. However, it's received far less support and more pause from moderate Democrats while receiving criticism from Republicans. And it's picking up momentum in the Senate, too, especially among White House contenders such as Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, and Kirsten Gillibrand. The ambitious proposal has been spearheaded by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders co-sponsored the deal but has not said definitively whether he will run in 2020. "So, look, the political stunts are not going to get us anywhere". He added that the plan would "shut down American energy" and "a little thing called air travel".

When the resolution came out on Thursday, roughly 65 House Democrats co-sponsored it, while fewer than a dozen senators did the same.

Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Ocasio-Cortez introduced two companion resolutions to bring the Green New Deal to vote last week.

The vote on the health care legislation didn't quite carry the punch Republicans had hoped.

"Instead of trying to cause mischief, the #Republican Party should put forward its own serious proposal to address #climatechange", Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse wrote on Twitter on Tuesday. When asked about the Green New Deal on Tuesday, Senator Sherrod Brown of OH, who is reportedly considering a presidential run, said that he supports a Green New Deal but is "not going to take a position on every bill that's coming out". "Unfortunately for Mitch, all he's going to do is show just how out of touch Republican politicians are with the American people".
