USA jury convicts Mexican drug lord El Chapo

“El Chapo” Found Guilty On 10 Counts In New York Trial

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, once the most powerful drug lord in the world, was convicted in New York City on all counts on February 11.

One of the world's most notorious drug lords, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, is on trial in NY and a star witness just revealed a lot about Chapo's Canadian operation.

Guzman is believed to have led the cartel for decades, and faced a total of 17 charges, including including operating a continuing criminal enterprise conspiring to murder rivals and money laundering.

After he was convicted, the drug lord waved at his wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, a former beauty queen, CNN reported.

Jurors in federal court in Brooklyn found Guzman, 61, guilty on all 10 counts.

U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue says he expects Guzman to get a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Guzman's lawyers did not deny his crimes as much as argue he was a fall guy for government witnesses who were more evil than he was.

It's been roughly three months since El Chapo's trial began.

NY police and others are on high alert outside and around the Manhattan courthouse, where authorities held an active-shooter drill Monday to prepare for the verdict.

Guzman, whose nickname means "Shorty", was extradited to the United States for trial in 2017 after he was arrested in Mexico the year before.

Yet, jurors reportedly had an "avalanche" of evidence to work with before reaching their verdict.

The verdict came on the sixth day of the jury's deliberations.

The tension at times was cut by some of the trial's sideshows, such as the sight of Guzman and his wife showing up in matching burgundy velvet blazers in a gesture of solidarity.

Recaptured drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is escorted by soldiers at the hangar belonging to the office of the Attorney General in Mexico City, Mexico, on January 8, 2016.

The worldwide notoriety of Guzman was boosted by two escapes from Mexican custody, one in 2001 and another one in 2015 - through a 1.5km underground tunnel large enough to ride a motorcycle.

Guzman made a name for himself in the 1980s as "El Rapido", the speedy one, by building cross-border tunnels that allowed him to move cocaine from Mexico into the United States faster than anyone else.

Guzman listened to a drumbeat of guilty verdicts on drug and conspiracy charges that could put the 61-year-old escape artist behind bars for decades in a maximum-security USA prison selected to thwart another one of the breakouts that made him a folk hero in his native country.
