The bookmaker's son was born and educated in Salford, Greater Manchester, rising to worldwide stardom but despite being nominated for Oscars five times he never won. Finney's break-out role followed when he appeared in "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning", and then he starred in "Tom Jones".

Albert Finney, the charismatic Academy Award-nominated British actor who starred in films from "Tom Jones" to "Skyfall", has died.

A family spokesperson released a statement confirming the star "passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side".

Other notable roles he played include the titular role in the 1970 version of "Scrooge", Winston Churchill in "The Gathering Storm", Ed Bloom (senior) in "Big Fish", and Daddy Warbucks in the 1982 musical movie "Annie". In 2001, he was given BAFTA's Academy Fellowship award, which has been compared to a lifetime achievement Oscar.

Five-time Oscar nominee Finney played James Bond's gruff gamekeeper Kincade in Skyfall. Finney also earned his first Best Actor nomination for his efforts and the smash hit turned him into a Hollywood leading man. He once said, "If I know I'm going to win, I'll go".

He was also reluctant to discuss his craft. "And what I've always believed is that I'll get a job".

Finney had a son, Simon, with his first wife, actress Jane Wenham.

He was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2007, after which he largely disappeared from public view.

Actor David Morrissey was among the first to pay tribute to Finney on Instagram and Twitter writing: "One of the true great".

Finney's most memorable role of the 1990's was his tough portrayal of an Irish mob boss in the Coen Brothers masterpiece Miller's Crossing, a last-minute replacement after the death of the originally-cast Trey Wilson.

The name might not ring any bells, but you've probably seen the face of actor Albert Finney before. "He loved every aspect of the business and we in turn loved and revered him".

He was a regular at London's Old Vic theatre, which said Friday: "His performances in plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov and other iconic playwrights throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s stand apart as some of the greatest in our 200-year history".
