Apple FaceTime Bug Lets Callers Hear & See You Before You’ve Even Answered

Apple FaceTime glitch lets you silently snoop on others

"In light of this bug, I advise New Yorkers to disable their FaceTime app until a fix is made available, and I urge Apple to release the fix without delay".

The bug is understood to affect any pair of iOS devices running iOS12.1 or later and is activated when a user adds their own phone number to a FaceTime call before the recipient picks up. Due to the bug, this causes the other person's device to effectively answer the call so that you can hear audio from their end. However, their phone screen stills show the call is incoming, rather than connected.

Now that FaceTime is disabled, callers will be unable to utilize this bug to listen and watch you without your permission through FaceTime.

The technique involves using the software's group chat function, apparently confusing the software into activating the target's microphone, even if the call had not been accepted. According to the report, a user running iOS 12.1 could potentially exploit the vulnerability to eavesdrop on others through a group FaceTime call.

In some cases live video from the camera of the other phone is also displayed.

Apple users were vulnerable to a major bug that allowed people to listen in on FaceTime calls before the recipient answered the call.

The Verge was able to reach an Apple spokesperson and Apple is aware of the issue with plans to release a software update later this week.

Apple has tried to distinguish itself from rival technology companies such as Google and Facebook by boasting about its privacy record.

If you value your privacy, you should seriously consider turning off FaceTime on your iPhone or iPad.

"The FaceTime bug is an egregious breach of privacy that puts New Yorkers at risk", Governor Cuomo said in the statement. This essentially turned any device with Group FaceTime - include iPhones, iPads and Macs - into a listening device.

After that, she tried contacting Apple to warn the company about the issue.
