Germany's Maas rejects five-year limit on Irish backstop in Brexit deal

Polish foreign minister proposes limiting backstop

Below is the wording of Labour's amendment.

Mr Corbyn wants MPs to be given the chance to back another public vote on Brexit but some of his backbenchers are concerned it could have severe electoral consequences.

British news reports say that Prime Minister Theresa May plans to reject a cross-party consensus on Brexit in favour of avoiding a Conservative split.

With exit day now fixed at March 29th, 2019, by the European Union (Withdrawal) Act, figures including historian Andrew Roberts and commentator Gerald Warner have already called on the Prime Minister to exercise this power, so Remain MPs can not derail the process in the meantime.

As a Brexit supporter in Leave-supporting Stoke-on-Trent recently said in an interview, "We voted to come out and yet, why should it take so long?" But other amendments calling for a public vote but aimed at garnering broader support could be proposed in the coming days.

A Labour member warns Jeremy Corbyn over backing a second referendum. "Shakespeare couldn't have done a better job in writing the tragedy we're seeing at the moment in Britain".

Jacob Rees-Mogg, chairman of the European Research Group of anti-EU lawmakers in May's Conservative Party, said Britain is likely to leave the European Union without a deal, with a revised Brexit deal as the next likely outcome.

He removed a controversial passage that would allow a motion by a minority of 300 MPs - from at least five parties and including 10 Tories - to be debated in order to allow for indicative votes on where to go next. "Now, we finally need to know what it does want".

"I will not now speculate on this Plan B because, as I said seconds ago, we are for Plan A, which is set by the withdrawal agreement", Schinas said. "We all have our individual views".

Pro and anti Brexit protesters demonstrate outside the Houses of Parliament (Picture: PA) There was little indication of compromise, with the Prime Minister once again ruling out a second referendum and an extension to Article 50 but stopping short of announcing an adjustment to her position. As of writing this article, GBPUSD pair is trading at 1.2877 down by 0.10% on the day. The shadow business secretary said the amendment did not "in any way" mean the party backed a second referendum.

European Union commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said he had heard nothing new since British Prime Minister Theresa May's laid out a tweaked divorce plan on Monday.

The PM also dismissed calls for another referendum on the issue, warning it would damage "social cohesion" across the UK.

The Labour move might also actually help May.

The prime minister ruled out a second referendum saying "Our duty is to implement the decision of the first one".

Some in Labour's ranks are also uncomfortable with the prospect of asking voters again.

Corbyn has refused to take part in cross-party talks unless May removes the possibility of a no-deal Brexit.

Responding to Schinas' comments, British Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman said Britain would do everything it could to prevent a hard border. During a question session in the House of Commons, she was repeatedly asked if she would rule out a delay to the U.K.'s withdrawal - but stopped short of doing so.

Saying that it was now likely that Britain would have to do it all again, Hague said it was with "a heavy heart" as "a second plebiscite on European Union membership will be the most bitter and divisive event in our modern history, complete with unbridled anger, accusations of betrayal, harrowing doubt and distraction".
