Brexit: Theresa May scraps £65 fee for European Union citizens

Then British Prime Minister John Major leaving No.10 Downing Street in London

It will be her fourth appearance in the House of Commons chamber in eight days.

Ms. May has been struggling to come up with a new Brexit strategy ever since her deal with the European Union was soundly rejected by parliamentarians last week by an overwhelming 230-vote margin.

Fox's warnings of political instability follow a week after Transport Secretary Chris Grayling was accused of scaremongering when he suggested that a vote against the government's Brexit plan could see a rise in far-right extremism.

After Mrs May's motion is published, lawmakers will be able to propose amendments to it, setting out alternatives to her deal. There are few signs she will make radical changes to her deal, though she may seek alterations to its most contentious section: an insurance policy known as the "backstop" that is meant to guarantee there are no customs checks along the Irish border.

Changes in the backstop could help win over Conservative eurosceptics, and the party's Democratic Unionist allies that May counts upon for a majority in parliament. May's stance is bad news for investors who've been hoping that cross-party talks would yield a Brexit policy that keeps closer ties to the bloc.

Mr Czaputowicz said that London and Dublin were "playing chicken" over the border and risked a "head-on collision" in which Ireland stood to "lose the most".

May's government is split between ministers who think a disorderly departure must be avoided at all costs, and Brexit-backers who believe it would be preferable to delaying or reversing Brexit.

May was asked in Parliament if she would change substantive elements of the withdrawal deal, or accompanying plans for a future trade relationship, perhaps to include a customs union with the EU as the Labour opposition has been demanding. That's left the government doubtful that the party could be counted on.

This motion is expected to attract amendments from groups of backbenchers seeking more of a say in the process. "And the European Union are very unlikely to extend Article 50 without a plan for how we are going to approve a deal".

"The withdrawal agreement with all its dimensions, including the backstop, is the best deal possible", the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier told reporters on Monday. Ms.

It would give Parliament the power to block a no-deal Brexit and hold a vote on whether to extend Article 50.

Guy Verhofstadt, the head of the EU Parliament Brexit steering group, welcomed news that the fee was being dropped for 3 million EU nationals, saying it had been a "key demand" for the EU legislature. Corbyn's spokesman refused to rule that out last week.

Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn of the Labour Party said that May's Plan B was just a second attempt to push through her doomed deal.

That leaves pro-Brexit Tories. This is not ruling out no-deal but simply deferring the point of decision. Rather than unveiling a Plan B, she set out Plan May with some procedural bells and whistles.

"Brexit would become meaningless". Worldwide trade secretary Liam Fox wrote in the Sunday Telegraph that "failure to deliver Brexit would produce a yawning gap between Parliament and the people, a schism in our political system with unknowable consequences".

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said Sunday that he and Prime Minister Leo Varadkar were in no mood to support alterations to the withdrawal agreement (WA) or the backstop. This would be a hard sell in Ireland, which would have to agree.

The European Union is ready for talks on Brexit but needs a "clear signal" from the United Kingdom on its next steps, Michael Roth, Germany's deputy foreign minister responsible for European affairs, said in an interview Monday with ARD television.

Addressing a regional party event, Merkel framed Brexit as an historic test of the EU's ability to withstand crises. Merkel said in Rostock, Germany.
