YouTube bans videos with potentially unsafe, distressing content

YouTube has announced it's no longer allowing videos that involve risky pranks or challenges on its site.

"Our Community Guidelines prohibit content that encourages risky activities that are likely to result in serious harm, and today clarifying what this means for unsafe challenges and pranks".

YouTube has unveiled updated community guidelines for creators, with a new section on risky challenges and pranks, clarifying its position on the behaviour: That is, don't do it.

The video-sharing site said it wanted to "make it clear that challenges like the Tide pod challenge...that can cause death and/or have caused death in some instances, have no place on YouTube".

YouTube said it can be a home for light-hearted pranks but reinforced that stunts which put people in danger were against its site policy.

The new policies follow reports of injury sustained during some of these challenges, like the "Bird Box challenge," BBC reports.

The platform has been home to a variety of challenges - such as the ice bucket challenge to raise money for charity - but one inspired by Netflix show Bird Box - where users are encouraged to carry out a range of activities, including driving, while blindfolded - has caused concerns. Around this time a year ago, YouTube was begging people not to take a bite out of Tide Pods.

Trump’s weekend: new Russian Federation questions, shutdown irritants
In the inquiry, counterintelligence investigators sought to evaluate whether Trump was a potential threat to national security. As the senator from IL said, "It's within his power to hold these investigations, and he should".

YouTube have updated their community guidelines to prohibit videos that depict "dangerous or emotionally distressing pranks or challenges" from the site.

The update comes after one Utah teenager crashed her auto while doing the Bird Box challenge, which involves people going about their daily lives while blindfolded.

The move comes in response to so-called "challenges" that have sometimes resulted in death or injury.

Many worry that YouTube's guidelines are too ambiguous and will lead to some content being deleted while others are left untouched.

YouTube said it had worked closely with child psychologists on what might constitute a traumatic experience.

YouTube is trying to prevent otherwise bright people from doing unsafe things. Content in retroactive violation of the updated policy may be removed, but that will not result in a strike.

YouTube says there will be a two-month grace period to allow channel owners to review the updates and make changes to their content.
