RBG Works From Hospital After Lung Cancer Surgery

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

She underwent surgery for colorectal cancer in 1999 and was treated for early stages of pancreatic cancer in 2009.

Although neither have indicated an inclination to retire before the next presidential election in 2020, many have expressed fears that the two octogenarians could experience health problems that might force them to step away from the court.

In November, she fell and cracked three ribs.

She was the second woman ever to serve on the court, after Sandra Day O'Connor and has been a lifelong advocate for women's rights. Court officials say she has nearly fully recovered from her ordeal, and the Supreme Court will return for business on January 4. Ginsburg was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday after undergoing lung surgery.

Last week, she also reportedly voted against President Donald Trump's proposed asylum restrictions from her hospital bed, while recovering from her lung surgery.

Trump has long bemoaned the amount of money the USA spends overseas and complained that other countries don't pay their share. Defence officials have cautioned against a timeline, but the withdrawal could begin in weeks.

Arberg told CNN there was no evidence of any remaining nodules after Friday's procedure and said preoperation scans showed no signs of disease elsewhere in Ginsburg's body. Scans showed no cancerous growth elsewhere, and no additional treatment is now planned.

The two malignant nodules were "discovered incidentally" during tests to treat her rib fractures from that fall, the court said.

From her hospital bed, Ginsburg cast a decisive vote blocking the Trump administration's attempt to stop anyone who crosses the USA border illegally from claiming asylum.

Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993.
