Paine relief: Australia win for 1st time since 'sandpapergate'

Sharma Jadeja

Australia beat India by 146 runs in Perth Tuesday to level the series with their first Test win since the ball-tampering ´sandpapergate´ scandal that rocked worldwide cricket.

India opened proceedings on a cracking day of test cricket with Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane looking to push their partnership and bring the Aussie lead down.

The last man to fall was Jasprit Bumrah, who went for a big shot but only succeeded in skying a chance back to bowler Pat Cummins.

'I am relieved personally, ' said Paine.

"We've got some inexperienced players in terms of Test matches played, to get a win like that against the best Test team in the world is going to give them a huge boost of confidence". Hence, Mayank's way into the playing XI for the third Test.

"The concern for Australia is that so far in this Test match the Indians have managed to get more uneven bounce out of the pitch than the home bowlers".

Johnson was also unimpressed that Kohli didn't acknowledge the crowd's applause when he was dismissed for 123 in the first innings.

Bulls engaging in trade talks centered on Parker
It's safe to say Jabari Parker won't be getting a statue outside the United Center when his tenure with the Chicago Bulls is done. A buyout of Parker is a faint and unlikely possibility for the Bulls, but other teams can assume he's on the trade block.

'Australia played better cricket and consistently, ' Kohli said. We had the belief that we could do it but they were relentless. The Indian team is envisioned to make a lot of changes for the Boxing Day Test at MCG. "Maybe we would have liked 30-40 less to chase", Kohli said at the end of the match.

But a constant thorn in the Australian's side was Indian skipper Kohli who put on a batting masterclass as he brought up seventh Test century against Australia - and his sixth Down Under - his 18th as captain and his 11th ton in all forms of global cricket in 2018.

It took Mohammed Shami and another Indian substitute to separate the duo.

After Australia scored 326 in the first innings, India replied with 283 runs which was largely built around Kohli's 25th century in his 75th Test.

Marcus Harris, Aaron Finch and Travis Head each compiled half-centuries in the first innings and Usman Khawaja grabbed another as Australia tallied 243 in the second.

'I know he's your captain but you can't seriously like him as a bloke, ' said Paine behind the stumps. Incidentally, Kohli was the captain in that game too, though as a stand-in.

India and Australia will also play a three-match ODI series starting from January 12 and the first match will be played in the Sydney Cricket Ground.
