White House digs in on border wall demand, risking shutdown

Trump is digging the GOP in deeper- and there’s no bottom in sight

The United States federal government is headed towards a partial shutdown from Friday with no end in sight yet to differences over President Donald Trump's proposal to build a wall along the border with Mexico that are holding up the passage of a spending plan. "He will not get a wall", Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on NBC's "Meet the Press". Before Mr. Trump took office, no shutdown had occurred when one party controlled the House, Senate and White House since the 1970s, when the federal government shut down under Jimmy Carter.

With just days until the government funding deadline, the two big immigration questions to ask are whether congressional Republicans can actually negotiate border wall funding and how effective they'll allow a hypothetical wall to be.

Democrats are willing to cough up $1.3 billion and want additional protections for immigrants like the Dreamers, illegals who were brought to the country by their parents as children.

"President Trump should understand there are not the votes for the wall in the House or the Senate".

Funds for border security only constitute a fraction of the $450bn or so that Congress is set to approve to fund federal agencies that will otherwise run out of money on 21 December.

White House senior advisor Stephen Miller said the wall - the last sticking point in funding negotiations - remained a top priority.

Spending discussions have stalled, with no talks between Trump and Democrats since Tuesday.

When it comes to placing blame for a shutdown, 43 percent said they would fault Trump and the Republican party, while 24 percent would blame Democrats, and 30 percent would blame both sides equally, the survey found.

The challenge for him will only get more hard in January once Democrats formally regain control of the lower chamber of Congress. If the president wants to debate the wall next year he can.

A new USA Today/Suffolk University poll says America Blames Trump and GOP for the Shutdown.

"As incoming House Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler said recently, even if Trump is not convicted, impeachment 'may in fact be necessary and successful at saying, in effect, you have violated the constitutional order, you are threatening the constitutional order, you will stop threatening the constitutional order".

But as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week, "I'm just sort of hoping for a Christmas miracle here". "He shouldn't use innocent workers as hostage for his temper tantrum to sort throw a bone to his base". "One is a physical barrier but also the technology, the manpower, the enforcement, all of those things, and our current laws are in some ways an incentive for people to come to this country illegally and they go through great risk and possibly great harm".

"Our members are asking how they are supposed to pay for rent, food, and gas if they are required to work without a paycheck", David Cox, the president of the American Federation of Government Employees, said in a statement. "Hurts families badly. We have a chance, working with the Democrats, to deliver great HealthCare!" I will take the mantle of shutting down'.
