Facebook bug exposed users' private photos

The bug allowed some 1,500 applications to access private

Even photos that users have uploaded to Facebook but never poster may have been exposed.

Friday's revelation quick drew sharp rebukes from privacy advocates.

The information Facebook gives to third-party app developers continues to be under scrutiny. "It's like a provider sending draft emails".

Facebook says the vulnerability is patched, so your private photos are again safe and sound. Facebook said today that a software bug affecting almost 7 million users may have exposed a broader set of photos to app developers than what those users intended. And photos that weren't uploaded to Facebook shouldn't be affected, either.

Facebook plans to notify affected users with an "alert".

Along with an apology, Facebook says that it plans to introduce a new tool for app developers to figure out which users might have been vulnerable to the bug.

In April, Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg testified before the US Senate over the Cambridge Analytica scandal, after the political consulting firm harvested private data of up to 87 million Facebook users for the 2016 election. A spokesman for the FTC declined to comment.

Privacy expert Katherine O'Keefe has said the move by the Data Protection Commission to begin a statutory inquiry into Facebook's compliance with data protection regulations is "very significant".

Taylor Swift releasing Reputation Tour concert film
Taylor Swift has announced that she will be bringing a concert film of her Reputation Stadium Tour to Netflix on New Year's Eve. He was wearing a mask and had a knife in his vehicle , and told police that he had driven from Colorado to visit the singer.

The incident initially appears to be relatively minor but could prompt privacy regulators in Europe to start investigations of Facebook, said Brian Wieser, an analyst with Pivotal Research. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) echoed in a tweet Friday.

There is a lot to unpack here, especially in terms of discovering something new that Facebook apparently has access to. It discovered the breach on September 25th, and the GDPR requires companies to notify the European Union within 72 hours.

"We're sorry this happened", Facebook said.

Silicon Valley is deeply divided over the issue of bug disclosures.

Hackers got access and stole private data in September. This bug affected as many as 14 million users over several days in May. Google came under fire for failing to disclose the bug, but many experts felt that the disclosure should not have been required since there wasn't clear evidence of stolen data.

Nothing much you have can about it until Facebook provides a list of the third party apps.

The affected users soon may be notified and directed to a Facebook help center.
