Almost 12 million pounds of ground beef recalled amid salmonella outbreak

USDA expands ground beef recall, says 12 million pounds pose salmonella risk

More than 12 million pounds of raw, "non-intact" beef products ― a label that includes ground beef ― are now covered by the recall, which was first issued October 4. Elderly people, children and those with compromised immune systems are more likely to develop severe illness.

Common symptoms of a salmonella infection typically appear within 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria and may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. "Even if they've eaten some of that beef and they're not feeling ill, and the family hasn't become sick, it's still really important to get rid of that product".

JBS Tolleson Inc. had previously recalled 6.9 million pounds of beef in October after an outbreak of the salmonella Newport strain.

FSIS is still investigating the outbreak, and said additional products could be recalled. A full list of the brands and how to identify potentially contaminated ground beef can be found on the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service's website.

Tory minister Sam Gyimah resigns in protest at Theresa May's withdrawal deal
She added: "The focus of myself and the Government is on the vote taking place on December 11". Mrs May has said no, Labour says yes but only if it does not get a general election.

Affected products have the establishment number "EST". The USDA says any of those products still in people's freezers should be thrown away.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. It said 246 illnesses have been reported.

The USDA also reminded consumers to cook all ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit. Other cuts of beef should be cooked to a temperature of 145 °F and allowed to rest for at least 3 minutes. Most people recover on their own but those who experience persistent diarrhea may need to be hospitalized.

Anyone with questions about the recall can contact the JBS USA Consumer Hotline at 800- 727-2333.
