May threatened with 'historical constitutional row' over Brexit deal

Leading Brexiter Liam Fox urges support for May’s deal | Financial Times

The UK's opposition Labour Party is pushing to launch contempt of Parliament proceedings against the government over its refusal to publish in full legal advice it received regarding British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit plan.

Lawmakers are voting on a motion finding the government in contempt of Parliament for refusing to publish the full guidance from Attorney General Geoffrey Cox.

Neither a "reasoned position statement" nor a document "setting out the Government's legal position" constitute the final and full advice provided by the Attorney General to the Cabinet.

The opposition Labour Party says it will look for the government to be held in contempt of parliament if the full text is not released, saying MPs need all available information ahead of next week's historic Brexit vote.

Gyimah, a former aide to prime minister David Cameron praised May's "grit and determination", but his resignation highlights the daunting task of getting the deal through parliament, with both Remainers and Brexiteers in her own party vowing to vote it down on December 11.

More than two years since Britain voted to leave the European Union, the testy debates that shaped the referendum have increased, deeply dividing the country and increasing uncertainty over its future which has unsettled markets and businesses.

She has previously warned that rejecting the deal could see Britain leave the European Union with no agreement at all - something economists warn risks a major recession.

"I will still have a job in two weeks' time", May said in an interview with ITV television when asked if she would quit if she lost the vote.

Earlier shadow attorney general Nick Thomas-Symonds told the Commons that the Government was seeking to avoid the publication of legal advice for "fear of the political consequences". Opposition parties say their representatives will vote against the deal, and so have dozens of lawmakers from May's Conservative Party.

Real Madrid’s Bernabeu to host all-Argentine Copa Libertadores final
Earlier, Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said his country would be willing to host the game. They have won the Copa Libertadores nine times between them.

Many of May's critics want her to go back and renegotiate - some suggest she could do so immediately.

It would be unable to sign free trade deals with non-EU countries.

She said that she had meetings with leaders keen to strike trade deals, including Argentina, the G-20 host, Australia, Chile and Japan.

"It doesn't really change any of the fundamentals regarding Brexit, however, and when the debate on the substance of May's deal starts tomorrow [in parliament] that will become the real story", he added.

"This week is hugely important as the debate in the House of Commons about the deal begins".

Their concerns mainly focus on the backstop measures aimed at preventing a hard border with Ireland, under which the United Kingdom would be in a "single customs territory" with the European Union, while Northern Ireland would remain aligned with many Single Market rules.

Between 80 and 100 Conservative MPs are thought to be ready to vote against the deal.

Several of her ministers have resigned in protest at the deal, and some of her MPs have called for a confidence vote in her leadership, something some believe could happen if she loses the vote in parliament.

The Attorney General said it would be hard to ensure information would be redacted, adding: "I can not take a step that I firmly and truly believe would be contrary to the public interest".
