US Already Affected by Climate Change

Al Gore blasts Trump for 'burying' climate report by releasing it on Black Friday

President Donald Trump said on Monday he doesn't believe a climate report out of his administration that warns of dire economic costs in the wake of climate change. Outside of Christmas and the actual day of Thanksgiving, there's no better day to drop bad news that you don't want people to see.

Disasters will cost the US hundreds of billions of dollars in lost economic activity and damage the health of millions, according to the US National Climate Change Assessment published on Friday.

Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins, representing a state where the lobster industry has been affected by warming seas, said on Twitter the report "should cause all of us, including the Administration, to take a harder look at the consequences of inaction & use what is known about climate risks to inform policy".

The warning appeared to conflict with the rhetoric used by President Trump, who has frequently downplayed global warming and once dismissed it as a hoax engineered by the Chinese government.

The report mentions the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, which was formed in 2010 by Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties and now includes 35 local governments trying to find ways to cope with climate change. "If you look around the globe over the past week, it's still relatively warm, so we have to be careful not to be so USA -centric or even northeast USA -centric in describing what's happening globally". In the December 2015 Quinnipiac poll, 83% of Democrats thought the USA should be doing more, compared to 62% of independents and 26% of Republicans.

"Self-reinforcing cycles within the climate system have the potential to accelerate human-induced change and even shift Earth's climate system into new states that are very different from those experienced in the recent past", the report notes.

General Motors Says Factory Closings and Restructuring Will Cost 14,700 Jobs
GM - whose brands include Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC - said the cuts would save $6bn (£4.68bn) by the end of next year. Under Unifor's four-year contract signed in 2016, GM must give the union a year's notice before closing the plant.

Liverpool's record-breaking start to the league outstanding - Jurgen Klopp
The rest of the Reds team pretty much picks itself as the season heads into the busy festive period. "Outstanding. The goal difference is really good", Klopp added. "Of course he will not leave".

"What the USA needs to do is participate in a long-term conversation about how you get to innovation, and it's going to need to be a conversation again that doesn't start with alarmism", Sasse said.

One benefit the report may have, even despite a lack of media coverage, may be to weaken the administration's legal case to gut environmental standards, such as the freeze in federal fuel-economy rules, which is already being challenged in court. A warming planet doesn't mean there won't be cold days. "Right now, we're the cleanest we've ever been". The second volume of the fourth National Climate Assessment detailed the huge and potentially catastrophic effects of climate change on the environment and humanity should it continue unmitigated.

In October, Trump said during a visit to inspect hurricane damage in the southern state of Georgia that climate change "is going to go back and forth", rather than be permanent. Trump has repeatedly dismissed the unanimous conclusion of the country's intelligence community that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 presidential election to help him and hurt Hillary Clinton.

The decisions Trump makes - or, more likely, doesn't - on climate change are not the sort of thing that are easily reversible.

Last year, Mr Trump announced he would withdraw the United States from the 2015 Paris Deal to combat climate change.

On Monday, Trump told reporters that he had read "some" of the report.
