Australia's Usman Khawaja, Travis Head frustrate Pakistan victory charge

Australia will play the fourth Test against South Africa at Wanderers in Johannesburg

Khawaja, who was born in Pakistan but emigrated to Australia in his childhood, said he was proud to have scored a hundred for his adopted country.

Sohail, who raised his century off 223 balls, tried his favourite cut shot off Nathan Lyon (2-114) and was caught behind as Australia struck with regular intervals.

Pakistan needed seven wickets on the final day to go 1-0 up in the two-match series after Australia resumed on 3-136, needing a highly unlikely 462 to win, but Khawaja (141) and Travis Head (72) frustrated them with a fourth-wicket stand of 132.

Veteran all-rounder Hafeez, playing in his first test since 2016 and his 51st overall, frustrated Australia en route to his 10th century before being trapped in front of the wicket for 126 by pace bowler Peter Siddle in the final session.

Barring that error, Hafeez looked in full control during his 208-ball knock which contained 15 hits to the fence.

The association had already reached 87 and Pakistan were desperate for the breakthrough. Sarfraz Ahmed, the captain, felt the pitch was best for batting in the early stages of the game. Abbas was getting the ball to reverse and Shaun Marsh had no answer to it. Before the dust had settled, Abbas also got rid of Mitchell Marsh (nought) to leave Australia in disbelief.

Asad Shafiq missed out on a century but scored a fluent 80, adding 150 runs for the fifth-wicket stand with Sohail as Australia's bowlers toiled for almost two days under hot and humid conditions on a flat wicket. He along with Imam-Ul-Haq gave Pakistan a flying start as they were 89 for no loss at lunch.

Imam was the first to fall on the day, offering left-arm spinner Jon Holland an easy return catch. For Australia, Usman Khawaja top-scored with 85 runs.

Asad Shafiq and Babar Azam then combined to add 71 to peg Australia back further under the sweltering Dubai heat. However, the off-spinner got his revenge when Shafiq hit one straight into the hands of the deep mid-wicket fielder, and that's when Sarfraz made the declaration.
