United Nations panel urges fast action to avoid climate catastrophe

Catherine McKenna

This again puts Trump at odds with the rest of the world when it comes to climate change, with the U.S. the world's only country to disavow the Paris climate agreement, which committed governments to attempt to stay within the 1.5C limit. Even 1.5°C comes with serious consequences.

It will be one of the main items discussed at a global conference in Poland in December, when governments will review the Paris Agreement (which the USA withdrew from in June 2017). Even at 1.5 degrees we're expected to lose up to 90 per cent of coral reefs, see the extinctions of animals and bear the brunt of more serious natural disasters. We also ask that political discussions be restricted to the topic of the article they follow.

Chris Mooney, covers climate change, energy and the environment for the Washington Post. President Donald Trump has instead pulled the United States out of the Paris accord.

Scientists, including some from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, had at the time already sounded alarms over climate change as they said it had "exacerbated" the heat wave in the country.

By 2030, global carbon dioxide emissions must be 45% less than they were in 2010, the report found.

The study was urgent because CO2, the main greenhouse gas, reached record levels in the atmosphere a year ago, and current pledges to cut emissions under the Paris Agreement would lead to warming of about 3 deg C.

"Every extra bit of warming matters, especially since warming of 1.5ºC or higher increases the risk associated with long-lasting or irreversible changes, such as the loss of some ecosystems", says Hans-Otto Pörtner, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II, one of three working groups comprising the report, in a press statement.

Reacting to the findings of the report, Harsh Vardhan said, "We have not been waiting for a report to take action against climate change". With global temperatures around 1°C (1.8°F) above pre-industrial levels at present, severe forest fires, hurricanes, and droughts are already ravaging nations around the world.

"There's a lot we can do individually or within our communities", said Debora Ley, a report author who works on adaptation and renewable energy in Latin America.

India vs West Indies live scores first Test day three
India made a decision to enforce to follow-on as they were trailing by 468 runs in the second essay. I just wanted to play my natural game, like I do in first-class cricket, " said Shaw.

In the 728-page document, the United Nations organization detailed how Earth's weather, health and ecosystems would be in better shape if the world's leaders could somehow limit future human-caused warming to just 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit (a half degree Celsius) from now, instead of the globally agreed-upon goal of 1.8 degrees F (1 degree C).

The report calls for immediate and radical action by all global governments, saying the required actions are affordable and feasible but require ambition and dedication. On the other hand, climate change negotiations are hard without some target to work towards.

Yet, to limit global warming to below 1.5°C, drastic action is needed in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport and city policy, the IPCC said.

He adds that "the impacts of climatic change hazards (like droughts, floods, etc.) will depend on the exposure (population in coastal zones, drought- and flood-prone areas and mountain slopes)".

More frequent or intense droughts, such as the one that almost ran the taps dry in Cape Town, South Africa, as well as more frequent extreme rainfall events such as hurricanes Harvey and Florence in the United States, are also pointed to as expectations as we reach the warming threshold.

Professor Piers Forster, of the University of Leeds and a lead author of the emissions chapter of the report, told DeSmog all paths to 1.5°C "require deep decarbonization of electricity generation".

Today, we are not on track to meet any of these goals.

The report makes it clear that climate change is already happening - and what comes next could be even worse, unless urgent global political action is taken. The agency removed its section on climate change from its website a year ago for an "update" that has yet to materialize.

At the Paris Agreement in 2015‚ 2 degrees was set as the ceiling we should aim to stay under‚ but that has now shifted to 1.5 degrees. "The report would not have been released without consensus of all".
