McConnell now open to Supreme Court nomination in presidential election year

Brett Kavanaugh

"Just two days ago the Senate confirmed a supremely qualified nominee who will be a faithful defender of the rule of law", the president told an audience gathered for the International Association of Chief of Police (IACP) annual convention. "Outraged." Presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway appeared on ABC Sunday to concur, adding that "a lot of women, including me", saw the controversy over his nomination as nothing but "political, political character assassination".

"She was upset by it, yes, as any woman would be who's the victim of sexual assault who was mocked and belittled by anyone, never mind the president of the United States", Banks said.

She was also critical of those who said they believed Ford's testimony about the attack, but thought she misidentified Kavanaugh as her attacker. Kamala Harris turned up in politically important Ohio, where she reminded more than 1,000 of the party faithful at the Ohio Democratic Party's fall fundraising dinner that she walked out of the Kavanaugh proceedings at one point because they had become "a sham and a disgrace". "I stand before you today on the heels of a tremendous victory for our nation", he said to roars. What's more, a majority of voters also say that they believe the women who accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct were telling the truth; that Kavanaugh lied about his alcohol use before the Senate; and that "his professional qualifications do not outweigh any questions about his personal conduct".

Dubbed "Breaking News", the ad envisions a report on a ruling in 2019 or 2020 in which Justice Kavanaugh casts the "deciding vote" in a 5-4 decision that guts Obamacare.

He said the "tactics" of the opposition "were very helpful, to me, in unifying our side". Again, that "mob" is made up largely of rape survivors and if there are so many survivors of sexual assault in this country that a small fraction of them can constitute a mob, maybe the lesson we should be taking away is that this is a very real problem that needs addressing.

Kavanaugh was officially sworn in Saturday night following the 50-48 vote in which he was confirmed by the Senate.

Trump will have an additional opportunity to celebrate the confirmation Monday evening when he and Kavanaugh participate in a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony at the White House at 7:00 p.m.

But Democrats say the anger displayed by scores of protesters on Capitol Hill, many of them women, will have a long-term impact.

"It's energized our base going into the election in a way we had not been able to figure out how to do prior to this", McConnell said.

The ranking member of the House judiciary committee, Jerry Nadler of NY, has said his party would investigate the sexual misconduct allegations against Kavanaugh if the Democrats reclaim the majority in the chamber. She was the only Republican who voted against the appointment.

He said Saturday he thinks Republicans "are going to do incredibly well" in the midterm elections after Kavanaugh's confirmation.
