Top Republicans eye Kavanaugh confirmation on Saturday

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh speaks before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill last week

Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation in the final vote on Saturday would tilt the court in favour of conservatives.

Capitol Police said Friday that 101 people were arrested for unlawful demonstrations in Capitol Hill buildings as two key swing senators said they would vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, all but assuring him the Supreme Court seat. This is ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee Dianne Feinstein. "I believe he is a good man". Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested, including actress Amy Schumer.

The Senate voted 51-49 to approve Kavanaugh in the procedural cloture vote, with one Republican, Lisa Murkowski, opposing going forward while one Democrat, Joe Manchin, voted to move ahead.

The committee, which has turned into a partisan hotbed in the past five years, has never had a Republican woman serve on it, even as the Senate's ranks have doubled from three to six female GOP senators in recent years.

A final vote on Kavanaugh's nomination could occur over the weekend.

No Republicans have said they will vote against Kavanaugh, although four have not committed to supporting him.

As the end of the vote neared, Maine Sen.

"He gratuitously indulged in hyperpartisan rhetoric against "the left, ' describing his stormy confirmation as 'a calculated and orchestrated political hit, fuelled with apparent pent-up anger about President Trump and the 2016 election" and 'revenge on behalf of the Clintons, '" The Post's editorial board wrote.

In a lengthy floor speech, Collins portrayed Kavanaugh as a "centrist" judge and cited her belief in the "presumption of innocence" when weighing whether to confirm the nominee, despite believing that accuser Christine Blasey Ford survived a sexual assault.

Collins said the FBI investigation appeared to be thorough. Murkowski said she made up her mind to vote against advancing Kavanaugh's nomination as she entered the chamber to vote Friday.

Republicans can only lose a single GOP vote if all Democrats vote against the nomination.

"I have extended this as a courtesy to my friend", she added. Gardner's spokesman did not respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Judge Kavanaugh and Ford both gave emotional testimonies regarding her allegations.

In a procedural vote Friday, senators voted 51-49 to limit debate and send the nomination to the full Senate, defeating Democratic efforts to scuttle the nomination with endless delays. As we noted by the White House, the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not interview Brett Kavanaugh, nor did the Federal Bureau of Investigation interview Dr. Blasey Ford.

But Democrats say women angered at the Kavanaugh accusations will turn out in large numbers to vote out Republicans.

Of the 18 Supreme Court nominations since 1980, four were made by Democratic presidents while Democrats also held the majority in the Senate. Kavanaugh could still win confirmation if Murkowski is the only Republican to oppose him.

Kavanaugh penned an op-ed in Thursday's Wall St.

The uncertainty lingered one day after the FBI completed an investigation into the allegations against Kavanaugh, the results of which fell firmly along party lines.

Kavanaugh conceded to criticism of his aggressive behaviour during the hearing, saying "I know that my tone was sharp and I said a few things I should not have said" but attributed this to being "forceful and passionate".

On Thursday afternoon, retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens told a small gathering in Boca Raton, Florida, that Kavanaugh should not be confirmed, according to the Palm Beach Post.
