Bitterly divided Senate pushes Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh past procedural hurdle

Sen. Susan Collins R-Maine arrives to view the FBI report on sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh on Capitol Hill Thursday Oct. 4 2018 in Washington

Susan Collins of ME and Jeff Flake of Arizona voted yes, as did Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Protesters chanted "Shame" at Manchin later when he talked to reporters outside his office.

"Me", Rice responded. Psaki said any Collins opponent would be "well-funded".

Sen. Susan Collins of ME, her longtime friend and fellow moderate Republican, spoke on the Senate floor for 45 minutes, explaining her support for Kavanaugh in detail. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., is a reportedly a yes on the nomination, barring a major development.

Republican senators, even swing votes like Sens.

A lone Democrat, Joe Manchin, voted in favour of advancing the process on Friday morning, but had not yet stated his position on the final vote.

Mr. Manchin was less enthusiastic than Ms. Collins, saying he has "reservations" about Judge Kavanaugh. "And my heart goes out to anyone who has experienced any type of sexual assault in their life".

If he wins confirmation, Kavanaugh - who has faced a bruising process that raised questions over his candor and partisan rhetoric, and his lifestyle as a young man - will seal a conservative majority on the nine-seat high court for years to come. Steve Daines, his vote for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh may do just that - and now he's got transportation ready if needed.

"I've known Brett Kavanaugh for 18 years, professionally and personally".

After he played a central role delaying the confirmation vote of Supreme Court Brett Kavanaugh last week, GOP Sen.

Republicans have said that a week-long investigation, summed up in the FBI dossier, had turned up nothing to corroborate the sexual assault allegations against the 53-year-old Kavanaugh, who now sits on a federal court in Washington.

In a speech lasting more than 40 minutes, Collins said she believed Kavanaugh was well qualified and she can not abandon the "presumption of innocence" over the sexual assault allegations against the nominee.

He's is up for re-election in a very red state, West Virginia.

Bash also asked the lawyer how Ford responded when President Donald Trump mocked her during a rally.

A new poll of likely voters in Arizona's upcoming midterm elections conducted Monday and Tuesday found that Democrats view the retiring Republican more favorably than voters registered in his own party - and it's a wide gap.

Democrats also challenged Kavanaugh's honesty, temperament and ability to be nonpartisan after he fumed at last week's Judiciary hearing that Democrats had launched a "search and destroy mission" against him fueled by their hatred of Trump.

While her "no" vote on the motion to end debate suggested Murkowski is inclined to oppose Kavanaugh, the senator sounded as if she was still anguished and uncertain. According to The Hill, the math is tight. With Daines out of the picture, the party would need every other Republican to vote for Kavanaugh for him to be confirmed in a Saturday vote in the event all Democrats oppose him.

Vice President Mike Pence, who could have broken a 50-50 tie, watched the vote from the White House. But Susan Collins' staff is insisting her vote on the final motion is still undecided. "She has the latitude to vote against the confirmation".

In addition to Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings, high-profile cases of sexual assault recently brought the issue to the fore in Alaska.

In keeping with her deliberative style, Collins had kept mum for weeks about how she would vote.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, then minority leader, hatched a plan to thwart President Barack Obama from remaking the federal judiciary by aligning Republicans against Obama's nominees in lockstep.
