Kavanaugh says he won’t let ‘false accusations’ push him out

Conservative supporters of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, President Trump's embattled nominee for the Supreme Court, have seen it that way ever since the first sexual misconduct allegation was leveled against Kavanaugh by a long-ago acquaintance, Christine Blasey Ford, this month. President Donald Trump leapt to his defense, the top Senate Republican accused Democrats of a "smear campaign" and an emotional Kavanaugh pledged to fight for his nomination and proclaimed, "I've never sexually assaulted anyone".

Any new nominee to the Supreme Court will likely not be confirmed in time for the November 6 USA midterm elections.

She made several eyebrow-raising statements during her CBS appearance, such as claiming some women don't report their sexual assaults because other women "make false accusations".

The New Yorker said it contacted Ms Ramirez after learning of a possible involvement in an incident with Mr Kavanaugh.

Trump, meanwhile, continues to blame the Democrats, saying they are out to "destroy a wonderful man". Susan Collins of ME, one of a few moderate Republicans whose votes will determine whether Kavanaugh is confirmed. Schumer accused Republicans of "a rush job to avoid the truth".

For Trump, getting the conservative Kavanaugh into the lifetime appointment would cement his mission to shift the court to the right for years to come.

There were no immediate signs that the emergence of a second accuser had fatally wounded Kavanaugh's candidacy.

Kavanaugh denied the new allegations, calling them "smears, pure and simple".

In further evidence of the Republican effort to salvage the nomination, Mr Kavanaugh and his wife were due to appear in an interview to be aired on Fox News later on Monday.

Only after that exhaustive process was complete did I learn, through the news media, about a 36-year-old allegation from high school that had been asserted months earlier and withheld from me throughout the hearing process. He's good. I know his heart. He said that he'd never done anything like the episodes his accusers have described and that he didn't have sexual intercourse until "many years" after high school.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham says the furor surrounding sexual harassment claims against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is a "total collapse of the traditional confirmation process".

Lies and distortions do reveal much about the character of the congressman of Arizona's 4th congressional district, however'. Gosar is one of President Donald Trump's biggest defenders, but his siblings do not appear to share his political views.

Kavanaugh said he has faith in God and faith in the American people, looking ahead to the process before him.

Late Sunday, a second woman - Deborah Ramirez, a Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh's - came forward with claims that he exposed himself to her and shoved his penis in her face at a dorm room party in their freshman year at the Ivy League school.

Ford, a psychology professor at Palo Alto University in California, said Kavanaugh attacked her and tried to remove her clothing while he was drunk at a party when they were both teenagers in the 1980s.

Democratic senators were expected to ask their own questions.

The allegations cause more headaches for Senate Republicans and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who on Friday told the Value Voters Summit in Washington that Kavanaugh would be on the Supreme Court "in the very near future". Delaying Kavanaugh's confirmation could give time for doubts about him to take root or for any fresh accusations to emerge.

Kavanaugh himself has vaguely suggested that a conspiracy is afoot, although he hasn't specified who he thinks is behind it.

Protesters march from the Supreme Court to Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill in Washington, Monday, Sept. 24, 2018.

Wear black and walk out.

Kavanaugh has denied both allegations against him. Ford's attorneys have said their client wants senators to ask the questions.

Republican senators on the committee, including Grassley, insist they didn't know about The New Yorker story on Deborah Ramirez's allegations until it broke on Sunday.

"It's very hard to have these conversations with your children which we've had to have", she said.
