Generals accused, Suu Kyi slammed for 'Rohingya genocide'

Pompeo Decries ‘Abhorrent Ethnic Cleansing' in Myanmar

Suu Kyi "has not used her de facto position as Head of Government, nor her moral authority, to stem or prevent the unfolding events, or seek alternative avenues to meet a responsibility to protect the civilian population", the report said.

The council created the mission in March a year ago - almost six months before a string of deadly rebel attacks on security and police posts set off a crackdown that drove Rohingya to flee into neighboring Bangladesh. "The Tatmadaw's tactics are consistently and grossly disproportionate to actual security threats", the report says.

They called on the UN Security Council to refer the Myanmar situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC), or for the creation of an ad hoc international criminal tribunal.

Myanmar's military has repeatedly denied that it has deliberately attacked unarmed Rohingya.

"I think what's happened is this United Nations fact-finding mission has taken a lot of time and a lot of trouble to really try to amass as much evidence as they can, to double check allegations, to go back for more interviews and I think that's why it's taken the time that it has", said Rae.

Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh held demonstrations and prayers on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict.

The mission also said that to expect justice from a domestic investigation in Myanmar is "simply naive, there is no accountability and there is no impartiality".

The list of generals also included Brigadier-General Aung Aung, commander of the 33rd Light Infantry Division, which oversaw operations in the coastal village of Inn Din where 10 Rohingya captive boys and men were killed.

Using type O negative blood in transfusions doesn't lead to unsafe reactions in the patient. Because blood type O does not contain any sugars, anyone is eligible to receive it.

The report cited "patterns of gross human rights violations and abuses" that "undoubtedly amount to the gravest crimes under worldwide law".

A year-long fact-finding mission determined that six Tatmadaw military commanders - including Commander-in-Chief Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing - are responsible for leading a campaign of genocide and other war crimes against Rohingya Muslims in the country. Instead, investigators relied on satellite imagery, photographs and videos and "875 in-depth interviews with victims and eyewitnesses".

U.N. investigators called Monday for leaders of Myanmar's military to be prosecuted for genocide, issuing the strongest condemnation to date of the nation's security forces since they launched a bloody campaign targeting the Rohingya Muslim minority.

"The result is a continuing situation of severe, systemic and institutionalised oppression from birth to death", the investigators say.

While acknowledging that the civilian authorities had little influence on military actions, it said they "through their acts and omissions. have contributed to the commission of atrocity crimes".

As NPR's Colin Dwyer reported earlier this month, "The Trump administration's sanctions were quickly criticized for aiming at the middle tiers of Myanmar's security apparatus and leaving its highest rungs untouched".

The company said in a blog post Monday that it's removed 18 accounts and 52 pages associated with the Myanmar military due to the ongoing ethnic violence against Rohingya Muslims in the country.

The company had already pledged to hire more Burmese speakers to monitor hate speech on Facebook, but the removal of the military-linked accounts shows a step-up in actions against those accused of promoting anti-Rohingya rhetoric. "The extent to which Facebook posts and messages have led to real-world discrimination and violence must be independently and thoroughly examined". "While we were too slow to act, we're now making progress - with better technology to identify hate speech, improved reporting tools, and more people to review content".
