Mossad behind assassination of Syrian rocket scientist

The Israeli intelligence agency Mossad has been accused of killing a top research director at a military agency linked to Syria’s chemical weapons program

The centre has always been linked by intelligence agencies to Syria's chemical weapons programme.

An Israeli air strike also targeted Asbar's research centre on July 22, Syrian state media reported. There have been no official comments from the Syrian government, with pro-government activists posting photos online of a charred vehicle said to be the scientist's.

"I can say that assuming the details of this man's activities are correct and he was engaged in developing chemical weapons and longer-range missiles capable of hitting Israel, I certainly welcome his demise", Katz told Israeli army radio. The Abu Amara Brigades released a statement on their Telegram channel saying they had planted explosive devices that detonated and killed Asber, ' the outlet wrote. Israeli officials refused to comment about the charges.

Israel frequently attacks military targets inside Syria in an attempt to prop up terrorist groups that have been suffering defeats against Syrian government forces.

In April, Gaza-born electrical engineer Dr. Fadi al-Batsh, was shot dead by an unidentified gunman on his way to morning prayers in Malaysia's capital of Kuala Lumpur. Hamas blamed Israeli spy agency Mossad for both killings. The blast also killed his personal driver.

The unanimous official, who spoke to NYT, said that Israel had been tracking Abzar for years, and had wanted to assassinate him over his prominent role in Syria's weapons program even before the outbreak of the civil war in 2011. According to the Times of Israel, Azbar was not on the blacklist. It's moving from a conflict between rebels and the government to a conflict that plays out within the region.
