Mexico governor says 'no fatalities' in Aeromexico plane crash

An Aeromexico jetliner crashed while taking off during a severe storm in northern Mexico on Tuesday smacking down in a field nearly intact then catching fire but officials said everyone on board escaped alive

Al Herrera jumped into action, helping elderly passengers and others off the plane before evacuating himself, she told CNN.

One passenger, identified as Jackeline Flores, told reporters she and her daughter escaped from a hole in the fuselage as the aircraft filled up with smoke and flames.

"A little girl who left the plane was crying because her legs were burned", said Flores, who did not give the spelling of her name and said she was Mexican but lived in Bogota, Colombia. Some were screaming. The plane came to a stop, she said, and everyone began hastily disembarking.

"The pilot had to execute a manoeuvre correctly and then we hit the storm at its peak while we were going up, and not while we were up in the air", he said. But they agree the plane was trying to take off during a storm. The left wing reportedly touched the ground and two engines became detached. He said the plane skidded into a field in a horizontal position, which allowed escape slides to activate so all passengers and crew could escape before the plane caught fire.

On average, about 56 percent of passengers survive airline accidents in which at least one person is killed.

Grupo Aeroportuario Centro Norte, the airport operator, also attributed the crash to bad weather, citing preliminary reports.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Aeromexico said it is awaiting further details from authorities.

"Our heart is with those affected and their families".

Aeromexico said it was working with authorities to provide medical attention to the 101 people aboard the flight.

Two passengers were injured critically, Fernando Rios, a spokesperson for Durango's State Coordination of Civil Protection said on Mexican television.

The head of Mexico's Transport Department said earlier that "the plane fell upon takeoff".

The Mexico City-bound Embraer 190 passenger jet smashed into scrubland near the runway shortly after the plane took off from an airport in northern Durango state on Tuesday.

Officials said 97 people were taken to hospital but that most only had superficial injuries.

Eighty people have been injured after an Aeromexico flight crashed while en route to Mexico City, according to government officials.

The names and nationalities of those on board are now unknown.

The Very Rev. Esequiel Sanchez was injured in the crash but "alert" and "resting", according to the Archdiocese of Chicago. "We heard a loud noise behind us-and the next thing we knew it was starting to smoke and fire".
