Donald Trump threatens government shutdown over immigration

Over the weekend, Trump threatened on Twitter to let the government shut down again unless Congressional Democrats give approval to tougher border security measures, including a wall on the southern us border.

"I don't care what the political ramifications are, our immigration laws and border security have been a complete and total disaster for decades, and there is no way that the Democrats will allow it to be fixed without a Government Shutdown", Trump said in a tweet Tuesday afternoon.

Asked if he required the full $25 billion the White House has requested to build a wall along the US border with Mexico, as well as his other immigration priorities, in order to avert a shutdown, Trump replied, "I always leave room for negotiation".

"I think the president's very serious about more money to fund the wall", Senate Appropriations Committee Committee Chairman Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) said Tuesday afternoon.

Congress has given the president some wall funding but far from the $25 billion he has requested.

San Diego is the latest city poised to join the list of California municipalities demonstrating their opposition to Trump's promised border wall by punishing businesses involved in working or even bidding on the wall prototypes or other border-wall projects.

"Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT!" he tweeted.

Trump relished in the kinship with his Italian counterpart over immigration issues in his opening remarks during the joint news conference, noting that the Italian Prime Minister was recently swept into power amid mounting frustrations with the migration crisis there.

Officials from ICE and Health and Human Services said they keep records of migrants who have been detained and have documentation of parents who left the USA without their children. But he's stressing the need for border security and overhauling the nation's legal immigration system.

Congressional Republican leaders are loathe to see a government shutdown shortly before the 2018 midterms and several Republican members of Congress have already publicly rebuked Trump's threats, calling them counterproductive to their prospects of holding onto their majority in both chambers of Congress.

Trump rejects Cohen claim that he knew about 2016 Trump Tower meeting
Cohen privately testified previous year to two Congressional committees investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. CNN first reported that Cohen has said that Trump knew in advance about the meeting and approved it going forward.

"I would be certainly willing to close it down to get it done", he said.

This idea has landed with a resounding thud among Congressional Republicans, virtually all of whom recognize that an unpopular shutdown - triggered by the party in power, just before an election - would erect yet another hard hurdle to maintaining the GOP majorities.

Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell said on Friday that funding for the wall would "probably" wait until after the midterm elections. On Monday, Trump said the U.S.' immigration laws were the "laughingstock of the world" while reaffirming his comments about letting the government stop operating if border laws don't toughen up.

Both chambers will have a short window to act before government funding expires at midnight September 30. Trump threatened at the time to veto the spending agreement, but eventually signed the bill while expressing his displeasure with Congress.

House Republicans released a spending bill this month that provides $5 billion next year to build Trump's wall, a plan he supports.

Commander Jonathan D. White of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, who is coordinating efforts to reunite divided families, called a family's decision to leave children behind "a desperate last act of a parent" that he said is "unfathomable until you've walked in those parents' shoes".

"During the deliberative process over the previous year, we raised a number of concerns about any policy that would result in family separation due to concerns we had about the best interest of the child", White said.

Last week, Republican leaders thought they had reached a deal with Trump to delay a confrontation on funding for the wall until after the November mid-term elections, according to a person familiar with their discussion.

"Please understand, there are consequences when people cross our Border illegally, whether they have children or not - and many are just using children for their own sinister purposes", Trump said.
