Mnangagwa and Chamisa both claim victory in Zimbabwe's landmark poll

MDC leader Nelson Chamisa

Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his main opponent Nelson Chamisa both said on Tuesday they were confident of victory, after peaceful voting in the first election since the end of Robert Mugabe's almost four decade rule.

On Twitter, he alleged there was a "deliberate attempt to suppress" voting in urban areas - MDC strongholds.

Zec head Priscilla Chigumba said 90% of polling stations had opened on time.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has reported a 75 per cent turnout, and expects to release the results on Saturday. While he did not name his choice, he hinted heavily he would vote for Chamisa. After voting, Chamisa said his victory is a foregone conclusion. "We should all be part of it", Mnangagwa said in the grim message. I'm only here to confirm that we are ready to lead. "He is young and can understand our plight as youth", said Ndumiso Nyoni, 20, a worker at a lodge in Lupane, western Zimbabwe.

"It is our view that the high voter turnout is indicative of a sound voter education and publicity conducted on a receptive electorate", Chigumba told reporters in Harare.

Polls, which are unreliable, give former intelligence chief Mnangagwa a slim lead over Chamisa. They will be taught the law. "Secondly, as long as Zec has made a pronouncement on a matter which they indicate was not under investigation, then that becomes sub-judice and I can not comment least my comments are used as a reference point", he said. "They are doing this bidding on behalf of Mnangagwa who is panicking", he said.

A woman talks on the phone after casting her vote at a polling station. "We have suffered enough", he says as as he walks off on to the winding dirt road.

"I can not vote for those who had reduced me to this condition‚" he said‚ referring to the coup d'etat in November which saw him replaced by former deputy president Emmerson Mnangagwa. "ED is full of lies just like the rest of the ZANU-PF", said Chris Lore, a 26-year old street hawker.

Mnangagwa, voting in his Kwekwe constituency in central Zimbabwe, said Mugabe had the right to express himself in the country's new "democratic space". "And let us accept the verdict". But, no matter who wins, "It will be changed". We are one people, with one dream and one destiny.

He voted with his wife Grace and daughter Bona in Highfield, a high-density township in Harare.

As well as electing a president, Zimbabweans were voting for 210 members of parliament and more than 9,000 councillors.

The President had time to chat with the polling officers, inquiring on how many people were allocated to vote at the polling station.

In Domboshawa village, about an hour's vehicle ride north of the capital, Harare, many had been in the queue even before sunrise. I can't vote for ZANU-PF.
