Dry conditions, excessive heat fan flames of California wildfires

5 Killed Including 2 Children and Their Great-Great Grandmother in California Wildfires

Two children and their great-grandmother were among the five killed in a Northern California wildfire as fire crews battled on to quell flames that have destroyed entire neighborhoods. It pushed southwest of Redding, about 250 miles (402 kilometers) north of San Francisco and the largest city in the region with about 92,000 residents, toward tiny communities of Ono, Igo and Gas Point.

More than 4,500 buildings were under threat, officials said.

Firefighters tried in vain to build containment around the blaze Thursday, but flames kept jumping their lines, he said.

In Redding, officials stuck a hopeful tone for the first time in days. The victim's identity was not released.

It's now the largest fire burning in California. After days of fortifying the areas around Redding, fire crews were increasingly confident that the city would escape further damage.

Bosenko said Sunday that 16 people have so far been reported missing over the course of the fire.

The blaze leveled at least 125 homes, leaving neighborhoods smoldering and 37,000 people under evacuation orders.

Stoke was the second victim of the fire which started Monday in Shasta County. High temperatures and heavy winds conspired to complicate the effort backed by more than 300 fire engines and 17 helicopters.

A vehicle problem ignited the fire July 23, but it wasn't until Thursday that the blaze exploded in size and raced into populated areas west of Redding before entering city limits.

Redding police chief Roger Moore was among those who lost their homes. An estimated 38,000 people are away from their homes, awaiting a chance to return. I have to go, " he said, and hung up.

"They say it was like a 'fire tornado, '" said Chris Corona, one man who lives in the area. "Still out watching over the ones still standing".

A total of five people have been confirmed dead in the Carr fire.

The Ranch and River fires in Mendocino County have collectively scorched more than 24,000 acres, Cal Fire said. A heavy haze hung low over the water, where some of the docked boats had melted.

The fatalities included two firefighters and a woman and her two great-grandchildren.

Sherry Bledsoe said Saturday that her two children and her grandmother died in the fire near Redding.

The newspaper said family members identified the dead as 70-year-old Melody Bledsoe, and her two great-grandchildren, James Roberts, 4, and Emily Roberts, 5.

It is the largest fire burning in California, threatening more than 5,000 structures.

The blaze in Redding, about 150 miles (240 km) north of Sacramento, on Thursday killed a bulldozer operator working with fire teams to clear brush around the fire.
