Lewis Hamilton speaks out about Ferrari after winning Hungarian Grand Prix

Red Bull's Max Verstappen angry over F1 engine failure at Hungarian Grand Prix

Bottas was ordered by his team to give the place back, perhaps hoping to avoid a penalty when the stewards investigate after the race.

Bottas and Vettel touched cars during the overtaking move, with some debris flying off the Mercedes.

That allowed Carlos Sainz and Romain Grosjean to take the last points on offer in ninth and tenth, although they also benefitted from Max Verstappen's retirement with a loss of power on lap six.

Lap 51: Vandoorne pulls over with a broken gearbox.

Lewis Hamilton began beautifully from pole position, and drove a sensible race, supported by Mercedes team-mate and fellow front-row starter Valtteri Bottas. It follows his victory in Germany and hands him a major advantage in the title fight.

Vettel, his rival in the race to become a five-time world champion, finished second after passing Bottas five laps from the end.

How did Hamilton and Mercedes do it?

. Bottas covered him off a lap later by mirroring the strategy, meaning both drivers were facing either a two-stop race or a monster stint on their new tyres.

Bar late skirmishes between Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas and Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo, the race itself was largely uneventful. But it is Raikkonen, quickly catching his team-mate, who is the fastest driver on track. It's a track where... this is the third-hardest track in the calendar to overtake.

With no rain forecast for Sunday's race, Vettel is hopeful that Ferrari's pace advantage in the dry will help him climb up the order.

A pit-stop error by the Ferrari crew looked to have cost Vettel second place, when the front-left tyre was slow going on.

The rain that fell more heavily in the second phase put a premium on getting in a good early lap but Canadian Lance Stroll spun his Williams in front of him and the Australian had to abort his effort.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, who were running in second and third place, respectively, when Vettel crashed, finished the race in second and third, as they came into the pits during the safety auto period while Hamilton, who was running in fourth when Vettel crashed, stayed out on the track to inherit the race lead before going on to win. The result will be seen as a big scalp for the world champions and further proof of how the championship battle will swing on split second decisions and minor errors.
