Japan posts record temperature of 41.1° celsius as deadly heatwave rolls on

The country has been enduring record-breaking temperatures of up to 40.7C (105F) after almost a week where thermometers have not dipped blow 38C in places. That broke the previous record of 41.0 C in Ekawasaki on the island of Shikoku on August 12, 2013. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the temperatures recorded have been around 12 degrees higher than the average temperatures.

A temperature indicator measures 41.0 degrees Celsius in Kumagaya, north of Tokyo, Japan, in this photo taken by Kyodo July 23.

The soaring temperatures have also raised questions over whether it was a good idea to stage the 2020 Olympics in the city in July and August with temperatures expected to exceed 35 C (95 F). Severe temperatures in the region have led to more than 30 deaths in Japan, authorities said.

According to Myers, in parts of Japan which do not often experience high temperatures, air conditioning is less prevalent, meaning people do not have cool locations to go for relief.

"We are observing unprecedented levels of heat in some areas", weather agency official Motoaki Takekawa said late Monday.

At least 11 more people died as a heat wave continued to grip Japan, local media reported on Sunday. NHK national television tallied seven deaths.

Temperatures in central Tokyo hovered around 99 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday, with temperatures rising above 100 degrees in some parts of the country.

Climate change is not one heatwave, and it's not one hot summer - it's a pattern of changes, but we've already seen these patterns unfold, from the devastating drought in California to the record-breaking temperatures in Scandinavia and Japan.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike acknowledged Monday that the recent heatwave was "exactly like living in a sauna".

Oppressive heat leading to the cancellation of events will be particularly nerve wracking to the organizers of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which are due to start in two years this week.

She said that the city has been working to address heat concerns for both fans and athletes. Other steps include developing road pavements that emit less surface heat, setting up mist sprays and planting tall roadside trees.
