Brexit rebellion costs British PM May another minister

May bows to Brexit pressure in parliament

"There is not going to be a second referendum ... under any circumstances", the spokesman told reporters.

With chaos looming in the vote's wake, ministers want Parliament to rise five days earlier, on Thursday rather than next Tuesday, as originally scheduled.

The government said being part of an EU customs union would prevent it from striking global trade deals, won the vote by 307 to 301, a slim majority for May of just 6.

In two votes in the United Kingdom parliament this week, the latest on Tuesday night, May only just avoided defeat at the hands of pro-EU members of her party. Hammond told MPs: "This does not undermine the bill, it keeps it on the road".

The Trade Bill is focused on converting trade deals between the European Union and third countries into bilateral deals with Britain.

The BBC reports that defence minister Guto Bebb "resigned so he could vote against the government", adding yet another minister to the growing list of resignations.

EU affairs ministers will soon have their first chance to discuss the UK's white paper, the UK's policy on its relationship with the EU after Brexit, and how they would tackle key issues, such as trade between the EU and UK.

A spokeswoman for May said the amendments are consistent with the original plan.

But the meeting will go on, the White House said, and Trump will spend the next two days taking "meetings" and playing golf. Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani , said on Twitter that the indictments were "good news for all Americans".

May said Monday that her plan honors the wishes of British voters - who in June 2016 backed Brexit in a 52 percent to 48 percent vote - while also protecting industry and security. "If we don't, we risk ending up with no Brexit at all", she wrote in an article in the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

In the preceding vote, the government had fallen to only its second defeat on Brexit in the Commons, as MPs voted by 305 to 301 for continued United Kingdom involvement in the EU's regulatory system for medicines.

The amendments undercut parts of May's Chequers agreement, a plan for Britain's exit from the European Union that some lawmakers said watered down Britain's future independence.

On two of those votes, her majority was cut to three.

The battle over the amendments to the Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Bill, or customs bill, is unlikely to be the last that May and her team will have to face.

The Government's defeat on medicines regulation is believed to have been secured by a substantial rebellion by pro-EU Tories.

Some 14 Tory rebels voted against the Government-backed Tory Eurosceptic clause that would prevent the United Kingdom collecting tariffs on behalf of the European Union unless it agreed to do the same.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said the legislation would be "the confident first step that the United Kingdom takes towards establishing itself as an independent trading nation for the first time in over 40 years".
