Russians charged in DNC hacking case

■ The GRU officers hacked into the e-mail accounts of volunteers and employees of the Hillary Clinton campaign, including the chairman.

The indictment charges that the conspirators "received a request for stolen materials from a candidate for the U.S. Congress", and "sent the candidate stolen documents". The defendants were part of the Russian Federation's Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff (GRU). Eleven of the 12 operatives are also charged with money laundering, as they are alleged to have used cryptocurrencies to fund their activities while concealing their connections to the Russian government; and with aggravated identity theft, for using peoples' names and passwords to commit fraud.

The officers also gave some of the materials to an unnamed - for now - organization and "discussed timing the release of the documents in an attempt to enhance the impact on the election", he said. Co-defendant Aleksandr Vladimirovich Osadchuk allegedly ran Unit 74455, which focused on assisting in the release of the hacked documents through DCLeaks and Guccifer 2.0, promoting those releases, and publishing anti-Clinton posts on social media.

However, "there's no allegation in this indictment that the Americans knew they were corresponding with Russian intelligence officers", he said.

The indictment also does not allege that any vote tallies were altered by hacking.

Third, Friday's move also appears to show that the Mueller team and top Department of Justice officials such as Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein are unintimidated by political threats against them.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters released a statement saying the new information "is consistent with what we have been saying all along".

Glenn Kirschner said on CNN Friday that Mueller's work has proceeded in the standard fashion of RICO cases - which stands for the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.

But with Mueller still investigating, it's not known whether further indictments are taking shape or will.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren On Why She Opposes Trump's Supreme Court Nominee
Just as important , Democrats would be angry across the country and looking to even the score following the White House's victory. About 10 key senators - two or three Republicans and a half dozen Democrats - are facing intense pressure over their votes.

Sergey Aleksandrovich Morgachev was a lieutenant colonel in the Russian military who oversaw Unit 26165's department in charge of developing and managing malware, including the hacking tool X-Agent used by the GRU, according to the indictment. Rosenstein said he briefed Trump earlier this week on the charges.

"If it is Russian Federation, which it probably is not, nobody knows who it is, but if it is Russian Federation, it's really bad for a different reason because it shows how little respect they have for our country when they would hack into a major party and get everything", Trump said.

Some researchers said the indictment might have depended on USA signals intelligence, the fruits of which are rarely revealed, because it quotes electronic messages sent to an unidentified organization presumed to be London-based WikiLeaks.

A few hours before the indictments were announced, Mr Trump described the Mueller investigation as a "rigged witch hunt" that was hurting the U.S. relationship with Russian Federation.

After the indictments were announced, top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer called on Trump to cancel his meeting with Putin until Russian Federation takes steps to prove it won't interfere in future elections.

After the indictments were announced, top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer called on Mr Trump to cancel his meeting with Mr Putin until Russian Federation takes steps to prove it will not interfere in future elections.

During a joint news conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday, Mr Trump said he loves the USA, but also loves "getting along with Russian Federation and China and other countries".

Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats said Friday that Russian cyber entities are probably "one click away" from repeating the kind of interference in the upcoming elections as Moscow did in 2016. "Anything you do, it's always going to be, 'Oh, Russia, he loves Russia'".
