UK's May names new foreign secretary

Government Ministers Attend The Weekly Cabinet Meeting

David Davis's friends are adamant he did not coordinate his departure with Johnson, but Baker clearly decided he had more chance of influencing the government from outside, and a series of other moves since appear to have been carefully choreographed.

But May's sense that she had faced down the rebels and weathered the storm is likely to have been shaken by Tuesday's resignations - which took the total number of departures since Chequers to seven - and she will be anxious about what the flying monkeys will unleash next. The tousle-headed blond Johnson is one of Britain's best-known politicians, and one of the most prominent advocates for Brexit. "The prime minister thanks Boris for his work".

It comes as the Tory government tries to get a handle of infighting over how best to deal with Brexit.

"The government now has a song to sing", he said. The trouble is that I have practised the words over the weekend and find that they stick in the throat.

May's proposals for a future European Union relationship after Britain departs from the bloc next March had taken two years of internal government wrangling to agree.

May met with Conservative lawmakers in a packed room at Parliament, in a bid to calm the feverish atmosphere in the deeply divided party.

Asked if Brexiteers needed to put the PM's future to a vote of the Conservative Party, he replied "it may well come to that".

Leaving the gathering, leading Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg said he did not think there would be a confidence vote over Mrs May.

The European Commission declined to comment on Mr Davis's exit but Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, said he hoped a change in faces might lead to a change in policy.

May told Parliament in a heated session that her plan was "not a betrayal" of the referendum vote.

North Korea Calls Latest Nuke Talks "Regrettable"
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono and South Korea's Foreign Minsiter Kang Kyung-wha in Tokyo . Our correspondent at South Korea's foreign ministry, Lee Ji-won, is on the line for us.

She looks set on facing down a rebellion in her Conservative Party, where hardline Brexit supporters are livid over her plans to negotiate "a free trade area for goods" with the EU.

Government unity began to fray within hours.

"It takes 48 Conservative members out of a total of 60 to trigger a leadership challenge; however, we are unlikely to see the challenge happen because there is not yet the belief that they have the numbers to effectively oust Theresa May", Hoez added.

Both have warned they will lose their seats unless the Tories deliver Brexit.

But May's allies fear more resignations may follow.

"I was elected to represent my constituents and the Prime Minister's team needs to be aware that backbench MPs won't sit idly by and allow a so-called "soft Brexit" with us being half-in, half-out", Andrea Jenkyns wrote in The Daily Telegraph.

Dominic Raab was appointed the new Brexit secretary on Monday.

The Suddeutsche Zeitung says Davis and Johnson "ran away" from May, who it says is now in the "most hard crisis" of her time in Downing Street.

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen told the Press Association: "I can't support the offer which emerged at Chequers - I think it's a breach of the red lines, in fact the offer is so poor that I couldn't support it even if the European Union were paying us for it".
