Japan says death toll from floods climbs to 100

Dozens dead and missing as 'historic rains' and floods hit Japan

TV footage showed a residential area in Okayama, in south-west Japan, with brown water spreading like a huge lake.

A broken embankment is seen in front in flooded Kurashiki city, Okayama prefecture, southwestern Japan. The city of Kurashiki and the Hiroshima prefecture are among the affected areas.

And with many people stuck in modestly equipped shelters with few possessions, or living in damaged homes with no running water or electricity, the rising temperatures posed a new problem, authorities said.

Evacuation orders are in place for almost two million people and landslide warnings have been issued in many prefectures.

The rains may has stopped in Japan, but the country is facing a long recovery process after floods and landslides killed at least 87 people in the southwest.

As the floods receded, emergency workers reached previously cut-off places where authorities fear they could find more bodies in the wreckage of homes devastated by rivers of mud and debris.

"There has been some serious impact on transport and other infrastructure, while some companies have been forced to temporarily halt production", Yasuhiro Yamada, the Bank of Japan's Osaka branch manager, who oversees the Kansai area, told a news conference.

Among the missing is a nine-year-old boy believed trapped in his house by a landslide that killed at least three others.

Rescue and search operations by Self-Defense Forces personnel and others were continuing in disaster-hit areas on Monday, as the Japan Meteorological Agency continuing to warn the public of the dangers of landslides and flooding.

Emergency warnings for severe rain remained in effect for three prefectures, with 11 inches predicted to fall by Monday morning in parts of the smallest main island of Shikoku.

Evacuation orders or advisories were issued to more than 910,000 people, it said.

Scientists have warned that one outcome of global warming could be an increase in rain-related disasters, and experts now say people should leave well in advance of evacuation orders where forecasts show heavy rain is possible.

The devastation started when the typhoon system that brought the heavy rains first made landfall in Japan, but most of the deaths have been reported in the last two days.

"Unusual weather patterns are a factor that corporations have to consider when making economic projections, but there is not much one can do", said Koya Miyamae, a senior economist at SMBC Nikko Securities.

According to the transport ministry, 17 railroad operators were suspending services on 56 routes in western Japan or elsewhere.
