US adds a solid 213,000 jobs; unemployment up to 4 pct

In June, the USA unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 4% from 3.8% the month before, coming off an 18-year low.

The manufacturing sector, a target of Trump's "Make America Great Again" agenda, added 36,000 jobs in June, just the latest of a series of good news stories about the industry.

Unemployment ticked up slightly to 4 percent as more people looked for work.

Wages were a bit of a disappointment in Friday's report, with average hourly earnings rising by 0.2% over the prior month and 2.7% over the prior year.

Figures from April and May were also revised higher, indicating the creation of 37,000 more positions than previously expected.

These people ultimately are classified as discouraged workers, who first fall down into a subset of the unemployment statistics (where the unemployment rate is now 7.8 percent in June compared with 7.6 percent in May) until they ultimately disappear completely from the workforce.

The EPOP for Hispanics rose 0.4 percentage points to 63.4 percent, a new high for the recovery, while their unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent, the lowest on record. But for now the sector, which accounts for about 12 per cent of the US economy, appears in good health.

Now back to the number you are seeing in today's headline - the 4 percent unemployment rate.

Signs of strength have helped bolster hiring despite the difficulty many employers say they're having in finding enough qualified workers to fill jobs.

Manufacturers and services firms have said in recent surveys that their business is improving despite anxiety about the tariff showdown.

Though economic growth appears to be solid, the gains have been spread unevenly.

Businesses hired robustly in June despite threats of trade tensions. Trump oversaw a steadily-declining unemployment rate which eventually reached its lowest level since 2000. Any escalation in the conflict with China could disrupt hiring as companies grapple with higher import prices and diminished demand for their exports. Automakers added 12,000 jobs in June.
