Woman climbs the bottom of the Statue of Liberty; 7 arrested

A protestor sits at the feet of the Statue of Liberty

Thousands of people were evacuated from Liberty Island on July 4 after a woman scaled the monument to protest the Trump administration's immigration policies and refused to come down.

Some law Enforcement officials were seen preparing to climb up to the base of the statue and confront the woman, while the NYPD began building a rope rescue system. It caused the National Parks Service to evacuate Liberty Island on one of its busiest days of the year. But, Quinn said, her climb was not part of the planned protest. ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is a division of the Department of Homeland Security whose officers arrest and deport unauthorized immigrants inside the USA, among other duties.

The cops then put her into a harness and guided her down from the statue to safety.

National Park Service police and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) were later called to the scene shortly after reports of an individual climbing the monument.

The Rise and Resist protesters acknowledged that the woman who climbed the statue participated in the unfurling of the banner but that her later actions were not part of their protest. She was eventually tethered between two officers and climbed down to the promontory via a ladder to safety.

Iran eyes private oil exports to help beat USA sanctions
In a change from Iran's generally anti-Semitic stance, Iranian protesters were chanting "Death to Palestine!" U.S. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said he expects to see a new package of measures offered by Europe soon.

Earlier Wednesday a group of protesters calling themselves "Rise and Resist" hung a banner reading "ABOLISH ICE" from the monument, and activists spells out the same message on their shirts.

Earlier in the day, 7 people were arrested for protesting.

That banner was organized by the group Rise and Resist NYC.

While the policy was abandoned, it is still unclear how and when some 2,000 migrant children will be reunited with their parents. Therese Patricia Okoumou, of Staten Island, was arrested after scaling the base of the statue and taking up temporary residence on Lady Liberty's right foot.

The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and was designated a national monument in 1924.
