Mina header dumps unlucky Senegal out in fair play first

Colombia's Yerry Mina thumped home a second-half header to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Senegal on Thursday that catapulted the South Americans into the World Cup last 16 and dumped their African opponents out of tournament.

Senegal finished level with Japan on points in their group, missing out on the knockout stages due to having more bookings. The next tiebreaker would be points earned in matches between the teams that are tied, but Japan and Senegal played to a 2-2 draw when they met in the group stage, so that was a wash as well. More importantly, he came through for Los Cafeteros when they most needed it.

Such was the stranglehold Senegal had in the first half, Colombia failed to have a single touch of the ball in the opposition box as the sides went in scoreless at the break.

Here's the goal, a thundering header by Yerry Mina in the 74th minute, that won Group H for Colombia. Japan, content with a 1-0 defeat to Poland in the simultaneous match, was stalling because it would advance if the scores remained the same. A Japan loss and a draw in this match, however, guarantees Senegal's advancement. Mateus Uribe took his place in that match and started against Senegal.

Colombia had got off to a poor start and suffered a blow early on when playmaker and talisman James Rodriguez was forced off injured.

Colombia had it all to do to book a spot in the last 16, with Senegal only needing a point to advance. Rodriguez scored both goals, including one that was voted goal of the tournament. Rodriguez scored both goals, including one that was voted goal of the tournament.

"We are doing everything to stay (in the competition), we are very optimistic", added Pekerman, who was in charge four years ago when hosts Brazil beat Colombia 2-1 and ended their hopes in the semi-finals.
