'Dark day for German football' after World Cup elimination

Nervous Germany increased the pressure after the break and poured forward but despite a one-sided second half it could not find the back of the net before South Korea's last-gasp double.

Supporters of the German national football team react as they attend a public viewing event at the Fanmeile in Berlin to watch the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup Group F football match between South Korea and Germany on June 27, 2018.

"We were playing for the Korean people", said Cho, a cult figure at home for his ostentatious, orange bouffant.

"It's too soon for me to answer, it will take a few hours to see things clearly, the disappointment is very deep in me", said 58-year Loew when asked if he would resign. The team, littered with stars such as Toni Kroos and Mesut Ozil, began by losing to Mexico 1-0 in their first game and only followed that up with a late victor against Sweden in their second.

Germany's elimination means the respective defending champions have been knocked out at the group stage for a third consecutive World Cup.

Germany was becoming desperate but Cho was huge in the goal yet all expected the world champ to do what it always does: get a goal when needed.

The World and Confederation Cup champions of football Germany lost to South Korea after showing a poor performance in two to zero goal match.

Egypt's Essam El-Hadary Makes World Cup History
Salah is also clearly not fully fit, but managed to score two goals in his two appearances, one from the penalty spot. Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary , who is 45, took the field for his team's final group match to set the record.

Mexico dominates in match against South Korea, wins 2-1
Mexico will clinch their place in the next round if Germany fail to beat Sweden in the other Group F game later on Saturday. But history was not on Mexico's side because it had not won back-to-back matches at a World Cup since 2002.

With Germany's loss, Sweden and Mexico advance from Group F. Sweden beat Mexico 3-0 in their match, which was played concurrently with the South Korean shocker. "I am convinced that Joegi will continue", Bierhoff said after the 2-0 defeat to South Korea in Kazan.

Later in stoppage time, South Korea added another goal when Son Heung-min broke free on a long ball and scored into an empty net, taking the game and eliminating the reigning champion.

The Korean national football team celebrates after Kim Young-kwon scores the team's first goal in stoppage time against the defending champion Germany at Kazan Arena in Russian Federation on Wednesday.

"At this tournament we didn't deserve to win again or move to the round of 16". Sweden defeated Mexico 3-0 to surge into the top 16 of the tournament. It is embarrassing that we will be eliminated from the table in this group.

However, after two late goals from the South Korean side, the Germans will head home early. Sweden and Germany both had three points, and South Korea had zero.

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon joined them, tweeting on Thursday: "Reality beat our imagination today" and praising the South Korean footballers.

World Cup Daily: Germany are out, while Brazil are not.
