Australia deserved to beat Denmark, says Bert van Marwijk

It's time to switch emphasis to attack says Mooy Aussie spy Mc Grath tips Socceroos to shock Denmark

Australia captain Mile Jedinak hammered in a 38th-minute penalty for handball awarded by the VAR to draw the Socceroos level at 1-1 with Denmark during the World Cup Group C match in Samara on Thursday.

That was the last meaningful action of the contest, with both nations having to settle for a share of the spoils which maintains their respective hopes of making it out of Group C and into the knockout stages.

"We certainly weren't at our best", Eriksen said after the win over Peru.

The match at the Samara Arena started off with Denmark applying early pressure on Australia, and it took the European side only two minutes to win the first corner of the game, although it came to nothing. "You can ask me those questions 100 times - I know Eriksen because I already saw him a lot in Holland, and I saw him also a lot of times in Tottenham", was all the Dutchman had to say when pressed on his intentions to deal with Denmark's chief threat.

Denmark moved on to four points and need at least a draw against France in their final game to guarantee a last-16 spot.

Van Marwijk may be tempted to turn to veteran Tim Cahill, looking to score at his fourth World Cup, or Daniel Arzani, the youngest player at the tournament, for further attacking options.

The Socceroos, meanwhile, went down 2-1 against France in Kazan, so are fighting to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Taliban to resume fighting as it ends first ceasefire in 17 years
But they have refused to meet with the US -backed government, saying they will only negotiate with the United States directly. Amaq, the news agency affiliated with Islamic State (IS), said the extremist group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel attempted to intimidate Jedinak before the penalty by approaching and shouting at him, but those attempts failed.

The fact Australia's Cup campaign has been drastically altered by the VAR will surprise no one with an interest in the domestic game.

"The team had tremendous guts, we just couldn't get ourselves over the line", said defender Trent Sainsbury.

They won't be the favorites in Samara, either, but after coming so close against the French, Coach Bert van Marwijk only had positive words for his players.

Andrew Nabbout's game ended prematurely when he fell and suffered what looked like a dislocated shoulder, the Urawa Reds front man replaced by Tomi Juric.

But shots on goal from the teenager, Tom Rogic, Aaron Mooy and Mathew Leckie couldn't find the back of the net.
