Dennis Rodman weeps on TV as Trump, Kim meet
- Celia Watts
At one point during a post-lunch stroll on the hotel grounds, Trump showed Kim the interior of the presidential limousine known as "The Beast". Kim called the sit-down a "good prelude for peace" and Trump pledged that "working together we will get it taken care of".
Then they dined on beef short rib confit along with sweet and sour crispy pork. Pompeo held firm to Trump's position that sanctions will remain in place until North Korea denuclearizes - and said they would even increase if diplomatic discussions did not progress positively. Top of the line, very good.
In the run-up to the meeting, Trump had predicted the two men might strike a nuclear deal or forge a formal end to the Korean War in the course of a single meeting or over several days.
They had appeared cautious and serious when they first arrived for the summit at the Capella hotel on Singapore's Sentosa, a resort island with luxury hotels, a casino, manmade beaches and a Universal Studios theme park.
Trump and Kim chatted amiably out of earshot as they walked into the building for the private meeting that preceded a full bilateral conference that included aides and advisers.
Pompeo said Trump phoned South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday to update them on the fast-moving, last-minute developments before Tuesday's summit. They were accompanied by their respective officials.
Addressing the media briefly after their handshake Trump said while sitting next to Kim: "It's my honor - we will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt". "Many people in the world will think of this as a scene from a fantasy.science fiction movie".
Tuesday's meeting is the first ever between a sitting U.S. president and North Korean leader.
Trump also said he would "absolutely" invite Kim to the White House.
"We're starting that process very quickly", Trump said during a brief signing ceremony, again providing few specifics following a day of ceremony and bonhomie with his former rival Kim.

G7 leaders agree to joint communique: Trudeau

"I truly hope it will be a successful summit that will open a new age for the two Koreas and the United States and bring us complete denuclearisation and peace".
As the two leaders met, Singapore navy vessels, and air force Apache helicopters patrolled, while fighter jets and an Gulfstream 550 early warning aircraft circled. The dollar was at a three-week high and the MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares was largely unchanged from Monday.
Body language expert said both men tried to project command as they met, but also displayed signs of nerves. That was to be followed by dark chocolate tarts, pastries and vanilla ice cream for dessert. Beyond the impact on both leaders' political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people - the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North's nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide.
As the cameras captured the moment, Mr Trump quipped: "Very nice". So we look nice and handsome and thin?
Before signing what Mr Trump described as a "comprehensive" document, Mr Kim said the two leaders had a historic meeting "and made a decision to leave the past behind".
Pompeo said the summit should set the framework for "the hard work that will follow", insisting that North Korea had to move toward complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.
Alluding to the North's concerns that giving up its nuclear weapons could surrender its primary deterrent to forced regime change, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters that the USA was prepared to take action to provide North Korea with "sufficient certainty" that denuclearization "is not something that ends badly for them".
"North Korea has previously confirmed to us its willingness to denuclearize and we are eager to see if those words prove honest", he said.
Even as Pompeo floated the apparent US concessions, he took a hard line on what the Trump administration would demand in return, He said economic sanctions would remain in place "until North Korea completely and verifiably eliminates its weapons-of-mass-destruction programs".
