Former security chief for Senate Intel Committee indicted

"I've been warning reporters to take care as this administration rattled it would go after sources like the previous one", wrote New York Times reporter Adam Goldman on Twitter shortly after the news broke Thursday night that a former staff member of the Senate Intelligence Committee has been indicted and arrested on charges of making false statements to the FBI during a leak investigation. James Wolfe is the man's name. Reached on Thursday evening before his arrest, Mr. Wolfe declined to comment. "But I'm also a believer in classified information. Has to remain classified".

If the manner by which the Justice Department pursued these records sounds familiar, it should: Something similar happened in 2013 when the Justice Department collected two months of phone records from Associated Press reporters to try to track down the source of a leak about a Central Intelligence Agency operation in Yemen. According to the indictment, Wolfe told the Federal Bureau of Investigation he didn't have contact with several reporters (including Watkins) who had been writing about Page.

The Times, along with most of the rest of the press, has condemned the actions.

"It's very interesting that they caught a leaker.it's a very important leaker", the President said while speaking to reporters at the White House.

Wolfe was the director of security for the Senate committee for 29 years, working for both Republicans and Democrats.

The committee's staff follows strict rules for the handling of delicate, and often classified, information for one of the most tightly secured committees in Congress. Wolfe would have been responsible for enforcing those rules.

Page has denied any involvement in possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. The Kremlin denies meddling in the election.

The committee leaders said they had fully cooperated with the investigation, including by making committee records available to the Justice Department. Eileen Murphy, a spokeswoman for the New York Times, was quoted in the newspaper saying: "Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, and communications between journalists and their sources demand protection".

It was bad enough for McCabe that he was involved in the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was charged with the same violation of 18 U.S.C. 1001 for lying to investigators.

Law enforcement officials did not obtain the content of the messages, according to the letter sent to Ms. Watkins by the Justice Department, but the information now in their possession - whom Ms. Watkins was communicating with, and when - could reveal her contacts.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions addresses the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund 30th annual Candlelight Vigil. He denied to investigators that he ever gave classified material to journalists, the indictment said.

Elements within the government have always been suspected in engaging in selective leaks, including classified information, to the media in an effort to control the news narrative. "And that includes Comey and his band of thieves who leak classified information all over the place".

Given Trump's constant bashing of what he calls the "fake news media" - meaning the mainstream press - and his characterizations of reporters as "scum", Thursday's news was predictable.

Trump has suggested that the justice system is not balanced in the prosecution of leaks.

Wolfe, 58, the panel's security director for 30 years, was accused of lying to FBI investigators about his contacts with four journalists and about whether he had provided confidential information to them. NPR's Ryan Lucas covers the Justice Department and is on the line.

Trump in March pardoned Saucier. The alleged leak described in the indictment came at a time when news outlets in collaboration with officials were actively pushing the unsubstantiated narrative that President Donald Trump colluded with Russian Federation. She added, "We obviously would have preferred to know".
