Chinese hackers 'steal USA navy data on undersea warfare and supersonic missiles'

Unnamed US officials told the Post that hackers took 614 gigabytes of information from the contractor, which was also unnamed.

According to a report by the Washington Post, Chinese hackers breached into computer networks of a USA defense contractor in January and February this year and stole "secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines by 2020".

Other details that were divulged in the breach included information on cryptographic systems linked to submarine radio rooms, Navy submarine development unit's electronic threat and warfare library, and data related to specific signals and sensors.

Government experts were said to have compromised the computers of a United States navy contractor, giving them access to the information, according to the Washington Post, citing unnamed American officials. An investigation is ongoing.

While the information was stored on the contractor's unclassified network, it was described as "highly sensitive" in the Post report.

Speaks further stated, "It would be inappropriate to discuss further details at this time". The aforementioned supersonic anti-ship missile was set to be developed by 2020 for use on US submarines.

The news comes days before a summit in Singapore at which US President Donald Trump will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who counts Beijing among his allies.

The Pentagon has spent more than $300 million since 2015 on the Sea Dragon project, which involves adapting current Navy technology for new uses.

According to the the New York Times, the data taken was unclassified. The Rhode Island-based military organization focuses on researching and developing submarines and naval weapons.

According to USA officials, the Navy is heading up the investigation with the help of the FBI, the Post reported.

In February, Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats testified that most of the detected Chinese cyber-operations against US industry focus on defense contractors or tech firms supporting government networks.

A US Navy spokesman said companies had a duty to tell the government if they had been targeted in cyber attacks.
