A report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed suicide rates increased in all but one state between 1999 and 2016. The overall rise nationwide is about 25%.

The CDC say the latest numbers show 45,000 people in America took their own lives in 2016, which was more than double the number of homicides that same year.

"It's not just about firearms", Deborah Stone, the lead author of the study, told NPR.

The increases were considered statistically significant in 44 of the states, with adjustments made for age, state, and sex across the 6 consecutive 3-year time periods observed. Almost 45,000 lives were lost to suicide in 2016.

Reidenberg understands the complexities of suicides, pointing out there are nearly always multiple causes, including mental illnesses, substance abuse, a life change such as a job loss or a break up.

Rural states, she explained, are still recovering from economic downturns.

Despite its many benefits, life in the limelight can be extremely isolating.

"Our mental health systems are just really struggling across the country", Prof Cerel says. In Ohio, suicides were up 36 percent.

"Comprehensive statewide suicide prevention activities are needed to address the full range of factors contributing to suicide", the report said.

On one hand Brown said the series may have gotten some teens to speak out on suicide as an important issue and they may have shared experiences. "For those who don't understand depression, when someone is in that place it's not because they want to die... it's because the ongoing, relentless darkness is too painful to endure anymore", Munn wrote. "Nobody in their family is going do that".

Tens of thousands of Americans die by suicide each year.

This week's report found that many suicides were in people with no known mental illness.

In Utah, 75 percent of deaths by suicides were among men ― roughly 5 percent higher than national data.

Gordon said doctors need to ask patients at every opportunity about their mental health and evaluate their risk for suicide. She said it's a myth that to broach the topic of suicide will invite someone to do so or put the thought in their head.

Loved ones might not have been aware of a mental health condition. "For celebrities, in particular, and those in the spotlight, there is an expectation that the general public has that because these individuals are successful and lovely, they likely do not or could never suffer from a mental or emotional disorder", Dr. "Some coroners go back and do a thorough investigation, some don't". They said coroners' reports from across the country indicate that suicides often follow relationship or financial problems, substance abuse and health crises. So, we would have to watch, especially with people on the Big Island who have lost their homes. For support outside of the USA, a worldwide directory of resources and global hotlines is provided by the global Association for Suicide Prevention.

"We learn how to read, how to write".

When someone is at risk of committing suicide, he said, treat the situation as a "CPR intervention" and get help right away.

Prof Cerel described it as having a "safety plan".

If you or someone you know is in crisis, there's help available.

Are you thinking about hurting yourself? Can you look at pictures of your kids or watch amusing cat videos?

The suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain this week reflect what federal health officials say is a rising trend nationwide.

Opioid use is also surging across the US.

There is a national campaign urging people to #Bethe1to help save a life by asking and listening whenever they notice warning signs in someone they know. That's part of what makes these things so devastating - the not knowing, and the knowing that you'll never know. "We're a nation that needs to recognise that isolation".
