Miss America Axes Swimsuit Competition

Trump I wouldn’t have hired Manafort if I knew FBI was going after him

The Miss America competition will no longer have the swimsuit or evening gown portions of the program, the organization announced Tuesday.

They are dropping the swimsuit competition in favor of an interactive session between judges and contestants in what's being called "Miss America 2.0".

Further, the evening gown segment of the competition will also no longer be required. Instead of rating contestants on how they look in a bikini, judges will now rank the women on "who you are as a person from the inside of your soul". Carlson said contestants will be able to wear "whatever they choose".

"I do appreciate that the board is aware of the times we live in and wants make positive, empowering changes", she said.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. When the Miss America pageant started in 1921, having young women parade around in bathing suits seemed like a great way to get tourists to come to the Atlantic City Boardwalk after Labor Day.

Current Miss America Cara Mund, who was crowned in September previous year, also took to Twitter to comment on the news, writing: "We're changing out of our swimsuits and into a whole new era #byebyebikini".

"We're experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues", Carlson said in the statement. A former Miss America herself, she co-hosted Fox and Friends for eight years. Carlson told ABC. "That's what we're judging them on now". But now the beauty pageant is making some sweeping changes.

Carlson says the "competition", as they're calling it moving forward, will be less focused on beauty, and more focused on what the contestants actually bring to the table, intellectually.

"Change is rarely easy, and I think it will take some time for many people who have been invested in the Miss America Organization to make this adjustment", said Maggie Benton, Miss Arkansas 2017. Carlson voiced her #MeToo support after settling a sexual harassment lawsuit in 2016 against former Fox News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes.

But Kendall Morris, who competed in 2011 as Miss Texas, said the swimsuit competition taught her how to eat healthy and exercise, "not just for 15 seconds on stage but for a lifetime". And of course such a notable change to an American institution has sparked much conversation today, including all kinds of chatter on that website known as Twitter.

And they did, ultimately they all resigned after the help of countless former Miss Americas and tens of thousands of change.org signatures.
