American fashion designer Kate Spade dies

Designer Kate Spade reportedly found dead from apparent suicide

David Spade is paying tribute to his late sister-in-law, Kate, who was found dead by an apparent suicide in her New York City apartment on Tuesday.

Kate Spade was pronounced dead at her apartment yesterday morning after being found by her housekeeper.

Kate and Andy married in 1994 and welcomed their daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade, in 2005. The medical examiner will perform an autopsy.

Police, who would not disclose details of an ongoing investigation, did say she left a note at the scene.

She left Mademoiselle in 1991, and noticing a dearth in fashionable-yet-sensible handbags, made a decision to strike out on her own. They asked for privacy during "this very hard time".

A crime scene truck was parked outside Spade's building on Manhattan's Upper East Side and barriers had been set up to keep back reporters and gawkers who were arriving to the building.

The memo also says that, "under our system of government, the president is not readily available to be interviewed". But that is far from settled. "He tells America instantly ... how he feels about this investigation".

The designer launched Kate Spade Handbags with Andy Spade - actor David Spade's brother - in 1993.

The company says in a statement that while Spade had not been affiliated with its "beloved brand" for more than a decade, she and her husband were its founders, and the news of her death is "incredibly sad". In 2007, the company was sold for $125 million to Liz Claiborne, which later rebranded as Kate Spade & Co. Last year, the handbag maker Coach acquired the company for $2.4 billion. In 2016, Kate launched a new line named after her daughter, Frances Valentine.

The New York Police Department confirmed the death of fashion designer Kate Spade, 55, on Tuesday. It's open 24/7, toll-free.

Her brand, Kate Spade New York, has hundreds of stores around the world. "I still have it", tweeted Chelsea Clinton. "She had a quirky visual language that captivated Bat Mitzvah girls and artists alike", Dunham wrote.

She was born on December 24, 1962, according to Marquis Who's Who, and earned a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University in 1985.
