All Eyes on California on the Biggest Primary Night of 2018

Officials with the Iowa Secretary of State Office say text messages directing voters to incorrect polling locations appear to have been a campaign's mistake.

It's primary Election Day in New Mexico for Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians.

ABC News Digital will be airing live, anchored coverage of the election Tuesday night starting at 9 p.m. CT. Coverage is expected to run through 12 a.m. CT.

With primary elections across California and seven other states on Tuesday, the political battlefield will soon be set for the first midterm elections of Donald Trump's presidency.

In a primary with unpredictable outcomes and complicated political calculus, California voters on Tuesday winnowed down crowded ballots in high-stakes contests to two candidates - regardless of political party - to advance to the general election in November.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, the state's first female governor, fended off three Republican challengers, while South Dakota Rep. Kristi Noem became the first female nominee for governor in her state as well. They were the only two on the ballot and will face off again in November.

In early votes, scientist Hans Keirstead (D) clung to second place behind Rohrabacher with 18 percent of the vote, with former Rohrabacher protege Scott Baugh right behind him with 17 percent of the vote and businessman Harley Rouda, national Democrats' preferred candidate, still clearly in the hunt with 16 percent of the vote with roughly half of precincts reporting (and the possibility that a tabulation error meant Rouda actually had more votes).

Democratic U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham is competing against state Sen.

The primary will also likely send two Democrats to the big show for the state's Senate race, with Sen.

"Get the vote out in California today for Rep. Kevin McCarthy and all of the great GOP candidates for Congress", the president tweeted.

Governor - Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom took an early statewide lead in initial returns from mail ballots, with 39.4 percent of the vote, followed by John Cox at 23.1 percent.

Voters in the central San Joaquin Valley came out for the governor's race Tuesday, with Democrats and Republicans saying they were voting largely along party lines.

In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill, a former federal prosecutor and Navy pilot and now the Democratic establishment favourite, bested a field of party rivals in the race to replace retiring Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen.

The issue was a factor for some Democratic voters, who said they couldn't back Menendez.

On the other side, Democratic strategists expect to see new evidence of an anti-Trump backlash, particularly in suburban districts across New Jersey and California, where many voters have soured on the Republican president.

New Jersey Democrat Robert Menendez is facing a primary challenge, as well.

In some competitive House races in Southern California, the fear of a shut-out loomed large.

Wicker said in a recent fundraising appeal that he wants to help the president "enact his America-first policies".

"Keep our country out of the hands of High Tax, High Crime Nancy Pelosi", Trump tweeted, referring to House minority leader Pelosi of San Francisco.

Democrat Bob Lambert, 62, of Fresno, voiced scorn for Republican candidates. "I'm not going to drop out of the race", he said. Menendez will face Republican Bob Hugin, a pharmaceutical executive, in the fall. Dianne Feinstein, who is running for her sixth term. Menendez's weak showing will give Republicans some optimism of flipping the seat in their effort to hold onto control of the Senate.
